Anecdote: I saw it late in the run in Australia at a local cinema, mid week, and the cinema was about 3/4 full, which surprised me. IOW, I think people picked it up late, mainly through word of mouth. Hopefully this is a trend elsewhere.

What I mean is they saw the commercials and were meh, but then heard from people that saw it was it was worth it.

It's not some dramatic rise, it's just that it's down to hardly any cinemas - I just checked one major chain, and two cinemas out of 16 are screening it today.

People are taking their last chance to see it, perhaps inspired by the 50th anniversary (which is getting a bit of coverage) as much as any late word of mouth.

Of the four reviews I saw in Australia, three were mediocre and the one positive one portrayed it as being nothing like the last two (which were quite popular here). It may be that they put some people off.

Our local cinema is re-running the film, so I took this chance to see it once more. There were actually a few people there considering that it's not advertised on the posters out front. So the US run isn't completely done yet

So how will the film that didn't make enough money for a sequel and practicality ended the TNG/DS9/VOY era/franchise is supposed to make "whiners" shut up?

Because Beyond is more successful and will wind up making almost double those two films combined. I for one don't want to return to an era where the trek films were not considered an event and don't justify continuing the franchise.
