New in the sense that neither Deadpool or the members of the Suicide Squad had appeared in and carried a movie prior to 2016. The same way that Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy were new IPs prior to their solo movies.
Why didn't Beyond do better at the Box Office?

Some interesting points there:
"There is a chance that the Paramount/Viacom Inc. picture could soar above $100 million (so sayeth China Film Insider), and a multiplier similar to Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation would get it to $70m. but that won’t make Star Trek Beyond into a hit by itself."
"So yes, unless it’s crazy frontloaded in China (always possible), we’re probably looking at a $300 million+ worldwide total, but on a $185m budget. These films still cost way too much. At some point, if Star Trek is to survive as a feature film franchise, Paramount needs to realize that this is never going to be the kind of series that makes Guardians of the Galaxy or even Mission: Impossible money. Star Trek is all-but-doomed to be a series that doesn’t go crazy overseas".
I think a fine Trek film could easily be made on a $130-150 mil budget. Just REALLY think about what CG shots you NEED. There were some cool CG shots in Beyond that were fun to look at, but they weren't needed to tell the story. VFX is crazy expensive. You can easily shave off lots of money by only placing a few well placed CG shots you REALLY need.
It may be that at least part of the difference is the inclusion of the abandoned earlier script. They'd already made a fair bit of progress on that before it was scrapped.
Which, to be fair, it always has been. Only TMP and ID did good business outside the US.
and Beyond of course.

Well a quick bit of math tells me: STID $238 million foreign..if China makes $105 million+$92.8 million current, plus the current 8 new releases and Japan at maybe another $20-25 million..that's about $220 million...

Very true. But I didn't think it was time for a colorful metaphor.
However, given the general popularity of the first two, it's still odd that this one wasn't more of a "must-see," esp. when the general consensus seemed to be that if you liked the first two, you'd like it, and if you hated the first two/preferred classic Trek, this would be in your wheelhouse. It seems like the first reboot movie that was truly for everyone, as I can attest to, given I, someone who completely hates the reboot movie series, thought it was awesome.
And you think that's enough?
When that actually starts happening, this point may be valid. Until then, other explanations for underperforming at the box office will be necessary.
Bad advertising?
It's never enough, but it IS good for Trek.

Had nothing to do with marketing, there was plenty of it--it far surpassed STID in quantity and timing--and it made the movie look fun...
There's a reason box office is down all over the world, including China, which had 9 years of rapid expansion.

The Chinese like kung fu stuff, maybe there wasn't enough of that for their taste.
Don't know, but it just opened and it set a franchise record, so maybe they liked the pretty colors.
