Whoops..STRINGS!!

What is TREK's biggest gaffo. You know what I mean. The strings on the those puppet things at the end of Cat's Paws, or the camera dude smoking the cigar in the reflection in TNG's Spock episode. What was TREK(s) biggest obvious gaffo? (Sorry, naming an entire series DOES NOT count!)

This isn't really a big one but it does bug me. In The Search For Spock, as the Enterprise burns up in orbit and the crew stands and watches there is a wrinkle in the matte painting just behind Sulu and Chekov. I love everything about that scene, from the music, acting, and writing to the lighting and effect of the Enterprise burning, but that damn wrinkle pulls me out every time. I wish they had spent just a bit more and went to Hawaii to film the Genesis planet scenes.

Near the end of the episode 'Way to Eden', you get two close up shots of Kirk with his insignia on the wrong side of his shirt. It's not hard to miss.

Reusing the destruction of the Klingon ship, again for Generations. That was too cheap and obvious, IMHO.

I am iffy on that one. If we are going to be fair, then we have to mention the launch of the Enterprise in KHAN. That whole departure from the dock, even the waving spaceman, was lifted right out of TMP and lasted far longer than the exploding Klingon ship in Generations. You would think with as much money as they get to make a movie, they couldn't afford one more FX shot..in both cases.

Well, in the case of TWOK one of the reasons they did it was to save money so they could use it later on in the film. If I recall correctly they didn't have an incredibly big budget and wanted to conserve what they had. Using stock footage in the beginning of the film was one way of doing this.

True...but GENERATIONS had budget woes too. I mean, how long into TWOK is it before we see new footage of the ncc-1701? The flybys, and the mock-battle with Klingons, were also lifted from TMP. ILM got paid a pretty good penny for that?

No, thats the point, they didn't have to pay for the reused footage, so they had more money to pay ILM for the effects in the rest of the film.

"Cat's Paws"?!? :wtf: :borg:

Anyhoooo, I'm gonna go with the wobbley USS Constellation model going into the Doomsday Machine's maw. Definitely the cheapest, quickie-looking effect in the series.

Yeah, but they made up for it with the awesome job they did battle-damaging the $10 model. I just wish they hadn't forgotten the impulse engines.

If you want to see "strings," I suggest you checkout this show :guffaw: :
