Who would make a great new Captain for Discovery?

Real response: I know you said nobody currently on the show can be selected, and I'm aware of line stating the new captain is on Vulcan, but I actually think Michael Burnham herself should be.

Joking response: TJ Hooker.

Something Big would have to happen that takes the new Captain out of the picture and where Saru would have to show he's not up to the position but Burnham is. That might actually be what happens. As long as the circumstances make it feel like it's a natural progression.

I'd prefer if Burnham not be captain. She's never shown any skill at leadership on the show. She might be a great field researcher, but the way her character is written now, the captain's chair would be her peter principle.

Saru on the other hand, despite some shaky starts, seems to be the Kelpian for the job.

Arnold J. Rimmer,
Leslie Knope,
Captain Raymond Holt,
Stephen Toast,

In reality, I'm not against Captain Robau, or the Captain Paris ideas. In lieu of that, any new captain with a south-Asian or middle eastern background would please me. Or an Andorian.

...scratch that.

Since we're talking about a ship with an infinitely improbable drive, there can be only ONE:

Zaphod Beeblebrox.

In keeping with the trend of Captains for the Discovery that are problematical (Lorca, the Empress, etc), how about Captain (later Fleet Admiral) Cartwright? (Perhaps he developed his strong hatred for the Klingons as part of the war?)

I like this. A lot. Cartwright is a character we barely saw much of. It was great that someone we associate with something as light-hearted as TVH turned out to be a co-conspirator. It shows how much you don't know people, sometimes, when you think you do.

The "best" part is his work would probably be what gets him promoted.

That was actually kind of my idea. Something happens within the first few episodes that helps Burnham prove that she really is the person everyone thought she was before the mutiny, and deserving of the captain's chair. But also show that Saru might not be quite ready yet, but do so in a way that doesn't hurt the character (he's probably my favorite).

BUT...

I like this idea better. Make it so.

I would like to see Number 1 from The Cage as Captain. Would be nice to confirm she was promoted and not replaced (or demoted to a nurse) :P

Would also be nice if she had a particular interest in Computer design, who would go on to create the voice interfaces, hence the same voice!

There are a ton of TOS characters who would fit perfectly. Stone, Bob Wesley, Ron Tracey, hell even Garth (although showing Garth's inevitable descent into madness would probably be too close to what we already got with MU Lorca).

I don't, however, think that Prime Lorca would work. I'd love to see him on the show, but there may be too many people on the ship who would resent having a Lorca - any Lorca - as captain again. Even though ReguLorca is obviously not responsible for what his counterpart did, there could still be some resentment among the crew.

Robert April. I mean, he's got to be doing something post-Enterprise.

I do like the idea of Number One (though I don't like the semi-canon name for her in the Discovery novels. I liked the name Morgan Primus from New Frontier), and I guess the timing would work. I like Garth as well, though his story might be too similar to Lorca's, as Mr. Laser Beam pointed out.

I would be okay with Morrow, Stone, or Nogura as well. Or a brand new character, another female captain would be fine for me. What if it was T'Pol?

Fanwank.
But....it would work xD

Nothing wrong with a little fanwanking every now and then.

But sure maybe the computer design interest could be after she is promoted to Admiral, and leaves the Captain's chair :)

I still think she would make a good Captain, and it would correct a long standing disservice to the character

They are shooting the first episodes, IIRC, so they almost certainly have been. Though it's entirely possible that whatever happens with Pike and the Enterprise takes up the first two episodes of the season, which means the new Captain might not appear till the third episode.

Just like the first season. There'd be a certain amount of poetry of having both seasons start off with a two-episode premiere, before the real arc (dealing with the ramifications of those episodes) begins in earnest at Episode 3.

It'd be equally great if they premiere Eps 2x01 and 2x02 together, giving us a little movie with Captain Pike and crew along as guest stars.

Andrew Lincoln.
I hear he has some free time coming up.

Not a Walking Dead fan myself, but he was decent in a UK show called Afterlife, alongside the amazing Leslie Sharpe
