Who is Captain Rayner?

Burnham: So Rayner, what was it like with Osyraa?

Rayner: How the hell do you know ab--?

Burnham: Actually I didn't, lucky guess and you just admitted it. You have no idea how many so-called Starfleet men gave me the same answer you did when I used that line on them. I figured out pretty quickly how the Emerald Chain lasted so long...

Rayner:

To me, she is the cringiest character to ever grace the screens of Trek. Its a chore getting through her scenes, and induces real life eye-rolls. She will be much better suited on the SFA show as a teacher. I'm sure i will get hate for this, but realistic or not, I wouldn't be choosing to hang out with someone like her in real life, either.

I thought she was completely out of line dealing with Raynor, her new superior officer. Unprofessional, disrespectful. Probably my least favorite Discovery character.
I mean that's been the MO of Discovery, very unprofessional I go back and watch clips of older trek to see what professionalism looked like on a star ship because I miss it a lot.
Funny enough she told Rayner thats how she runs her ship,

But there's nothing natural about it, that's not how real people talk. The writing and dialogue is what make discovery unappealing at times, not necessarily the plot lines themselves.

Now Pull the other leg.

How strict and professional starfleet is has been in debate for decades, with Roddenberry waffling back and forth on how "military" it was. It didn't help that the 2 most famous Trek captains, Kirk and Picard, started their portrayals as by the book strict commanders (I believe Farpoint Picard was even worse than Jellico actually) and as the years went on their portrayals basically became just Shatner and Stewart real life selves onscreen, complete with their much more (relatively speaking) laid-back civilian personalities.

Kirk actually referred to himself as a soldier to the Organians in Errand of Mercy.
And in Whom Gods Destroy he states
GARTH: Upon the firmest of foundations, Mister Spock. Enlightened self interest. You, Captain, are second only to me as the finest military commander in the galaxy.
KIRK: That's very flattering. I am primarily an explorer now, Captain Garth.
