Who and what do you want to become starship names?

My first thought is it'd be nice to see Trek pay tribute to the severely underappreciated Gene Coon. But a USS Gene Coon would probably be too meta and cutesy, and a ship name using just his last name would be, well... very easily misunderstood.

Runabouts named after Maine rivers would be utterly welcome in my household.

Kennebec
Androscoggin
Penobscot
Sebasticook
Allagash

for starters...

Being a Nebraskan, I'd love a runabout USS Missouri. :techman:

Also - and this would probably work better as a civilian cargo freighter, given the namesake - I'd love an SS Edmund Fitzgerald. (In fact I once saw a fan rendering of a Starfleet freighter with that name but I forgot where it was. :( )

Which really just shows that a lot of people could do amazing things if society was structured in a way that would allow them to reach their full potential.

I would like to see some of the Trek actors who have died be honored with a name. Like the USS Nimoy or USS Nichols etc.
Indeed, I also respect that naming style. Star Trek: Picard did not quite go so grandly obvious, but did do a few.

Edison-class U.S.S. Harlan (NCC-52277), possibly named for the late writer Harlan Ellison
Duderstadt-class U.S.S. Trumbull (NCC-72370), named for the late VFX director Douglas Trumbull
Echelon-class U.S.S. Cole (NCC-97938), possibly named for the late graphic designer Lee Cole as well as 12 Monkeys protagonist James Cole
Gagarin-class U.S.S. Passaro (NCC-97955), named for the late modeler Fabio Passaro
Jein-class U.S.S. Gregory Jein (NCC-103145), named for the late modeler Gregory Jein

Mistake Not (My Current State Of Joshing Gentle Peevishness For The Awesome And Terrible Majesty Of The Towering Seas Of Ire That Are Themselves The Mere Milquetoast Shallows Fringing My Vast Oceans Of Wrath) is the greatest spaceship name in the history of sci-fi.

I want trek to move away from naming ships after people. Both real and fictional. Although mythological figures are exempt. Like Heracles and Hermes. Nothing after planets though. Too confusing. And more ship names like Enterprise, Defiant, Valiant, Etc.

While mythological figures can't suddenly be discovered to have dark secrets in their pasts like real people, their stories can be seen/re-framed through the lens of modern sensibilities, or can be corrupted by media re-boots (certain movies/books about these figures may be remembered best and thereby tarnish the connotations of the name). Though I suppose the (still valid) virtues they were supposed to represent at the time are what count.

I would like to see more Bible names and places for ship names. Elijah, Abraham, Jerusalem, Ark, Commandments, etc.

I wonder if comic book characters/superheros/iconic characters from TV and movies will be considered worthy of starship names. So Superman, Frodo, Leia Organa, etc

None of these things bothered people before. With full knowledge public places were named after historical figures and they had statues erected in their honor for the work they did. But now it's cool and trendy to 'cancel' people, living or dead. That's very Maoist.

modern sensibilities
I hate those words. It's just an excuse to vandalize history and rewrite it, to suit the occupiers/invaders ideology. And besides the people who hold such modern sensibilities, are a very vocal minority with a large megaphone. Who do not reflect the will and beliefs of the greater public as a whole. See the whole bud light fiasco. I dont drink that stuff and even I knew who the target audience was.

No. Fuck abraham. I may no longer be an edgy atheist. But I still fucking hate abraham and the damage his insane, paranoid delusions have done to this world. What god demands blood? As the greatest star fleet captain once said; "What god needs with a space ship?"

The issue is full knowledge of what and knowingly accepted by who exactly. Canceling is certainly not always right, but to suggest that means it's always wrong is ridiculous. And the idea that it's some purely modern invention is just wrong. We may have changed the criteria for what is and isn't acceptable, but there were lots of popular figures dumped into oblivion for cultural reasons through the centuries and we certainly didn't just now start taking down statues for the first time in human history.

Also, this:

Is exactly the same thing you're complaining about.

It's not that the criteria has changed. It's who's in control that changes the criteria. The people at the top have their own culture, beliefs and values. And if said culture, beliefs and values, don't line up, with the culture, beliefs and values of the general population. Then civil strife is all but guaranteed. Ask the british in afghanistan, india, africa, etc.
