I'm kind of wary of naming starships after real people, because you run into the issue of historical re-evaluation and the fact that an awful lot of historically significant people weren't terribly nice.
Personally think they should keep the personal names to smaller ships, and not name larger/more powerful ships after people. That was basically how the US Navy did things during the first half of the 20th century. Trek for a long while mostly stuck to that, perhaps unintentionally so. I think out of the seen/commonly recognized Constitution, Excelsior, and Galaxy class ships the only ones to be named after people are the Hood, Farragut, and Frederickson.
