Spoilers Where do things go from here?

Far far far better. I don’t want this much fanwank in my weekly Trek. A little here and there is okay but not on a consistent basis.
Matalas has the advantage of having produced a show that's been well-received critically, seems to be doing well for the network, and has gone over well with a sizable portion of the fanbase much better than any other Paramount+ offering with the arguable exception of Strange New Worlds.

Paramount would be crazy to cut him loose without at least attempting to discuss another project.

Where do we go from here?

Well, to the early 2260’s with Pike and I guess back to the 32nd century with SFA
I just don't think Paramount teases that Q-Jack scene if they didn't want to come back to these characters and the 25th century time period. They know Matalas has been pushing for Legacy. They know a sizeable portion of the fanbase is pushing for it too. It's stupid to tease a scene like that, and then piss off the same fans a few weeks later when you say: "Nope, we're not doing that."

There are always…possibilities

I'm thinking when they announced the series of streaming Trek movies that Star Trek: Legacy would be something they'd do in that vein. That way they could tell a few stories of the 1701-G, space them out over a couple movies and not worry about having to do a 10-episode arc and be locked into multiple seasons.

The actors could also be free to pursue other projects and come back to do a couple movies.

I have this feeling that Star Trek: Legacy will happen. Jack mentions the word in his last line of the finale on the bridge and it will give us a time period never done before for Trek.

Calling it "NuTrek" always sounds like an attempt to devalue the newer series in relation the older ones. Intended or not.

Yes, that is exactly what the vast majority of viewers are doing. They compare lazy NuTrek to good and real Star Trek from the 90ies. Since Discovery will never be remembered as a real Star Trek show, there shouldn’t be an issue to name it NuTrek. Facts my friends, bitter but inescapable…

Buddy, I don't think you understand the meaning of the word "fact".

Absolutely diddly dick of what you stated even approaches being considered a fact.

Now asinine... that's a far better term to describe your statement. I know how much you enjoy that word.

Where do we go from here?

The battle's done,
And we kinda won.
So we sound our victory cheer.

Can I just say that I really hate this term.

It's all Star Trek.

Nah. I adore nuWho and it's a useful term. (Now JJ-Trek, THAT'S derogatory.)

What do we call the NEXT era of Star Trek? (When there is a nostalgia soaked revisit of Disco in the 2040s?) That's one for the ages.

I would say we're still in the current era that started in 2017. Discovery is still in production though it will end soon, and its spinoffs are still active (SNW, and soon, academy) probably for awhile. There are time periods being covered all over the place, so I don't think we have any discernable shift. Picard was something of a vanity project and a way to get TNG viewers interested in the streaming service, so it is something of an outlier. If they make a spinoff of Picard, that will probably be keep that viewership returning, if they have found it doesn't translate from watching PIC to watching SNW and DISCO reruns. I'm sure they'd be perfectly happy if people subscribed just to watch old TOS and TNG reruns, as it would be far cheaper.

Over time, building up the library full of ST content keeps people renewing monthly.

So if something continues on and the character of Jack Crusher returns I would assume at some point he will meet his half-brother on screen.

Agreed fully. And you could make the argument that S3 soared past SNW amongst fans considering it cracked the top 10 in streaming. Unless SNW S2 manages to do the same. It certainly has the potential to. But I think there is quite a bit of room to give Matalas a shot at developing a new spin off.

  1. STD is (mercifully) going away.
  2. Lower Decks is getting long in the tooth.
  3. Someone at CBS/Paramount had the good sense to axe the idea of an entire series about the overused Section 31 (thanks for ruining something else STD) and turn it into a movie instead.
  4. Kurtzman's Academy series isn't set in stone.
  5. By the time STD ends, SNW will be the only live-action series running.

Why not give him a chance to do something more of the fanbase will enjoy?

I'm still dubious about Legacy happening, at least anytime soon, but I'd be cautiously interested depending on the cast. I'd definitely be interested in a Seven and I guess Raffi led show. If it'd mostly be Jack, then I'm much less interested.

Matalas and the TNG actors keep talking about how it'd be all their kids I guess on the Enterprise or just around in Starfleet. Seven and Raffi supervising all the TNG kids and everybody wondering when their parents might show up isn't exactly my idea of what I'd want out of a show like that. I'd just have to see what the premise and cast is.

Right now, I'm way more interested in the SFA show and what's in store on SNW.

I believe he’s already been “cut loose.” It’s up to Paramount and Kurtzman to see if he will come back. I would imagine some conversations are already happening. But it also comes down to one big thing: money. Streamers are cutting back. So it might be a bit before we see another series in this era,

Some perspective.

DSC Season 2 was released in 2019. SNW Season 1 was released in 2022. A three-year difference. For the Hell of it, let's blame Covid. Let's say Legacy is greenlighted tomorrow and it takes two years instead of three for it to make it from development to completed first season.

We're not getting Legacy, if it happens, before 2025. But I think 2026 would be more likely. If DSC set a precedent and "five is the new seven", then SNW will finish in 2026. Five seasons, five-year mission. It makes sense for SNW to run five seasons, no matter what PR might or might not say. Finish it off with a 60th Anniversary Special, then launch Legacy.

Then there's Terry Matalas. He's not going to stay in idle-mode. Legacy would have to be worked around whatever other commitments he has or will have, that he can't just walk away from. It's like Tetris.

If you want Legacy and you want it now ("Now! Now!! Now!!!"), you're out of luck. If it happens, we'll have to wait for it.

Personally, the way PIC ended, I'm happy with this as a stopping point for 24th/25th Century Star Trek. And I'm happy with it as a stopping point for me. Though I'm a Disco Fan, so of course I'll watch DSC Season 5, the S31 Movie, and give SFA a chance. What was I saying about a stopping point? But, anyway, I don't think there needs to be a "What's next?" as far as something picking up where Picard left off. I view it as more of a "Would be nice.... "

I agree. I think calling it "New Trek" and "Old Trek" gets the same point across without sounding like it's trying to make one sound like it's less than the other.
