What will new Picard show be about?

For my money, a Star Trek series featuring Picard should be primarily set in space. He doesn't have to be the captain. Heck, it doesn't even have to be a starship. But to have a character like Picard in a universe like Star Trek's, but have it not be space-based would be a huge waste.

Maybe he is an ambassador and he's trying to negotiate peace between two species and he has to spend time interacting with each, getting to know them and what they want or need.

We could see him in space as he travels from one planet to the other. We could see a battle where he physically imposes his ship between theirs to try to stop the fighting. We could see him on a station when he meets with their representatives. We could see him on their planets as he learns about their cultures.

We could also see a twist or a problem as he learns that there are those within the Federation that want him to fail. The military industrial complex likes selling weapons to both sides. The council likes having two strong powers between us and those big bad guys over there. He has to find common ground for the two warring races while simultaneously fighting against or defying his own leadership.

I like finding out that bad guys are actually good guys,
but wouldn't it be interesting if they were tinkering with B4 until Data's personality emerged? And Goldsmith's theme.

Ok so I’ve heard/read some ideas on this - Picard will be an ambassador, Picard will be commandant of starfleet academy, Picard will be an admiral.

In an ideal world, what would we like the Picard show to be about?

For me, I’d love something like the following:

Picard is retired. He never was promoted to admiral as he never wanted to be anything other than a starship captain. So not long after the death of Data (4-5 years maybe) Picard retires and takes up archaeology or vineyarding or some such. He’s not on active duty any more but it’s still appropriate to call him “Captain Picard”.

Then the Borg reappear, or the space jellyfish from “farpoint” or some other thing from TNG that Picard is uniquely qualified to deal with - on a starship but in an advisory capacity.

Picard wants none of it. He’s done with starfleet. He’s lost too many friends to the service and he’s happy in his retirement (well, he’s feigning happiness at least).

Starfleet invokes the little known seldom used “reserve activation clause” to force the issue and Picard reluctantly returns to deal with whatever this latest problem is.

Some of this show could be set at starfleet command, or at various starbases with Picard being the central character. Or we could also see him dealing with being on a starship but not being its captain - a bit like Kirk at the start of Generations.

In short, Picard would still be the legend we know him to be, he would still be perfectly capable and competent to command again - but he wouldn’t want to. We could see Picard wrestle with his instinct to be the captain versus his desire not to make it so.

So long as the overarching story is engaging enough I think that would be a compelling show. What does everyone else think? Answers on a postcard.

Four or five years after the death of Data? It has to be a hell of a lot longer than that.

And honestly? I'm not looking forward to this. I find this news very disappointing. This just sucks.

Well I meant that Picard would have been retired since 4-5 years after the death of Data. Like he stayed in starfleet another 4-5 years after Data died then jacked it in. So since it’s been 20 years since NEM near enough he would have been retired for nearly 15 years.

This is the power of math people!

Omg I just quoted Tilly

As for the show overall - I have mixed feelings about it. I love Picard but I’m not sure how far I trust the new production team yet. I’m cautiously optimistic.

A mild mannored orthodontist by day, at night Picard dons a mask and cape, and fights crime in the supposed utopian Federation.

Picard finds out he has 5 adult children from different women across the galaxy and sets out on a journey to retrace his steps in TNG and retrieve them. Each child has a unique skill and becomes a member of the crew and by the end of the season we have an entire bridge crew of Picards.
1. Vash
2. Philippa Louvois
3. That lady from “we’ll always have Paris”
4. Anij
5. That lady who played the piano in the Jeffries tube

^ Picard’s known romantic conquests.

There’s potential here...

I know a lot of people have said they want Picard to be a diplomat of sorts on this show rather than a Starfleet captain, but I kinda want the show to start off with him as an Archaeologist, just because that’s what he was into before he joined starfleet, and was nearly his chosen profession.

Kids out of wedlock is more of a Kirk thing, isn't it? Picard's kid thing is either clones or imaginary children from implanted alien memories.

There are two distinct issues here. There's an absolutist position that any change whatsoever is verboten, and then there are those who object to the execution of said change.

TMP introduced three major changes to Trek (besides Shatner's rug). The Enterprise, the uniforms, and the Klingons. Out of the three, the uniforms faced the most lingering backlash. Why? Because objectively speaking, THEY LOOK LIKE CRAP.

It's often hard to articulate why something looks like crap. It's a visceral thing. You know it when you see it. While not everyone agrees on what constitutes crap, usually the average sentiment bubbles to the top and it's fair to just stick a label on it, like a thumbs up/down.

Objectively speaking, the TMP uniforms were crap.

Likewise, the Disco Klingons look like crap, as does other stuff like the half-collar uniforms.

I get what they're saying about all the different clans or blood-lines and all. From a canonical perspective, that's fine. But when it comes to sitting through long scenes of Klingon dialogue with subtitles, it doesn't work. The masks just don't allow the actors to emote enough. The faces have shifted too much into grotesque territory that you can't really empathize with them. They're all creepy Nosferatus.
I like everything about TMP and I'm not alone in that. Whether the uniforms look crap or not is entirely subjective. Saying they had more muted colours is objective. Stating that you hate them because they had more muted colours is subjective.

That's not to say I don't think they couldn't have improved the design. You can see similar , more military designs crop up all over the place with collars and shoulder pads.

There are things in every Trek show that could be improved and the Picard show will be no exception.

It wasn't just the muted colors. It was the lack of contrast by not having black pants and collar and the material they used which resulted in unflattering curtain-like waves and wrinkles, plus the tight jumpsuit version that exposed "Decker Units".

I understand the criticisms and yet these are still subjective opinions. There are others, including armed forces personnel, who say that, taking into account the fictional technology, these are more realistic duty outfits for everyday wear than TOS or TWOK.

Susan Sackett said on Facebook that her Technician's one-piece was really comfortable to wear (although maybe not so much for the men).

Slight variants on McCoy and Chapel's medical uniforms have been used in TWoK, Star Trek 2009, and Discovery. The dress uniforms in Into Darkness and even Pike's new Discovery uniform show elements of TMP design with collars.

I do agree that the uniforms with darker trousers looked more interesting and black trousers would have worked just fine, plus I'm not sure about the boots but others disagree. These are all subjective assessments .

Kurtzman is behind it.... so probably nothing good.

This video has some interesting theories on the matter:
