What was your first R-rated movie?

I don't really recall, but it was either Saturn 3, King of the Gypsies, or Escape from Alcatraz. My step dad was really into movies and there wasn't much else to do back in that era, pre cable and video rentals. We went to see many of them in the drive in.

Serpico...and wow, that was a long long time ago..But I actually grew up in an era BEFORE the rating system...I remember seeing NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD at a matinee as a double bill with Chitty Citty Bang Bang and most of us being scarred for life because of it!!!

Rob

I don't remember which one I saw on TV (HBO, whatever) but I remember the first I saw in the theater - "Sudden Impact" - Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry - 'go ahead, make my day'.... yeah!

I'd say Terminator 2

I suspect that's the answer for much of my generation. Either that or Aliens.

The 1st R-rated movie I saw in theaters was probably Speed or True Lies.

The 1st R-rated movie I saw in theaters by myself was probably either Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, The Matrix Reloaded, Phone Booth, or Terminator 3.

None of those movies I consider very serious "R"s. Most of them only got that rating due to the repeated F-bombs.

Either Slaughter House Five or Friends. Both when I was in High School. A substitute teacher brought in Slaughter House Five to show to the class. It was a science class so I've no idea why. He forgot about Valerie Perrines boobies.

Sounds like my high school government & chemistry teachers.

No clue though it was one of the following:

The Terminator
Total Recall
Under Siege
Robocop

I was in the sheltered child catagory, myself, who wasn't allowed to watch anything "violent" until I was about 10 or 12. I snuck those in before that when I spent the night with my grandparents a few times. Of course now violent action stuff is one of my favorite genres, so I guess it didn't work. If anything, I suspect doing that makes kids want to see violent stuff even more as it peaks their curiosity, rather than being good for them, as was the case with me. I suppose it depends on the kid and whether or not they're bright enough to put it into perspective as fiction.

LOL! 99% of the movies listed in this thread are rated 12 over here!

We have two different categories over here: -18 (graphic content) and X-rated (mostly pr0n).
My first -18 must be either Street Trash or Cannibal Holocaust. I saw them at the same period.
My first porn movie was called Secrets de Femmes and it was on December 6, 1986...

I was sixteen when I saw my first R-rated film. It was the 1970 drama Joe, starring Peter Boyle -- a very raw, violent and profanity-filled movie for its time. However, the first movie I remember seeing that had nudity and foul language -- to be exact, one instance of the word "shit" -- was Rosemary's Baby, which came out two years earlier. The MPAA rating system didn't yet exist at that time; the film has since been rated R.

. . . my first R (and over) rated movie was, I think, Hatari. I know, I'm dating myself.
Hatari?? You can't possibly mean the 1962 adventure flick with John Wayne and Red Buttons, filmed in Tanganyika (present-day Tanzania) and directed by Howard Hawks. There were no MPAA ratings then, but today the film would be rated G or at most PG.

Were you thinking of some other movie?

We have:

G
Contains nothing offensive. Kids movies and the like. AKA Dull and predictable.

PG
Parents are urged to use this ethereal thing called "parental guidance", as the film may contain things they might not want young children to view. Death, violence, evil doing slightly more evil things. This is pretty much a redundant rating in my opinion.

PG-13
Contains some Material that parents think may be inappropriate for kids under 13, such as sex jokes or some of the minor swear words (which they probably already know).

R
Restricted. Parents are urged not to take anyone 17 and under to these due to a high quotient of graphic violence or swearing, but they aren't restricted to. However, most theaters will not admit anybody under 18 who doesn't have an adult along to R movies.

NC-17
Nobody under 18 admitted at all. Usually due to pornographic content.

X
I don't think I've seen anything rated X, but it's probabally out there. Same as NC-17 only more hardcore and graphic. Or was X replaced by NC-17, not sure.

NR
Simply put, Not Rated by the MPAA. In other words nobody gave enough of a crap about it to rate it. Usually foreign films or some domestic independent works. Could contain anything.

I have no idea; I've seen R-rated movies for as long as I can remember. My parents never established restrictions on content of any kind in our household. Perhaps as a result, I grew up generally indifferent to the salacious effect of things usually embargoed.

Was Beverly Hills Cop rated R?...saw that when I was a kid. My parents got it on VHS when it came out and I snook a peak.

I just want to say I *love* Hatari.

It is the least John Wayne-like of all John Wayne movies, and a hell of a lot of fun.

Indeed, NC-17 replaced X in 1990. The MPAA didn't have a copyright on the X rating, which as a result was often used (without the MPAA's input) by pornographic films.

I have no idea what my first R-rated movie was. My parents let me watch pretty much anything I wanted. They'd rent R-rated slasher flicks full of gore and nudity and I could watch them with them.

Somehow I turned out okay. As a matter of fact, ironically I'm quite the prude with my kids. I don't let them watch anything unless I know it's not too violent.

The first R-rated film I saw in theaters was Terminator 2. I was like 13. An older kid my friend knew got us tickets. We went in and told the ticket-taker our dad was inside and he let us right in.

For me it was a selfregulating thing, my parents never had to worry about me looking att too violent stuff since I was so scared of most violent and scary stuff  Finally broke that at about 13 with the combo breaker of going to see "Starship Troopers" and seeing "Jaws" on TV. from there it's gotten progessivly "worse" to the point that I know prefer some gore if appropriate.

Mutenroshi brings up a point, about the porn movie. I think I was about 9 or 10 when I saw my first. We'd let the recording just go on a movie channel and after the movie the porn came on around midnight. It was a an all girl movie and featured lots of strapons. I think it's telling somehow that the first porn film I saw featured two women DPing the third with strapons, probably has affected more then I might care to admit

That reminds me, I've pretty much always been able to see "15" rated stuff in cinemas. I'm so tall that I started going to them with "GoldenEye" in 95 when I was 11, and just kept on going. Only got called on it once, ironically the second time when I tried to see "GoldenEye", and that was at a different theatre. I remember trying to argue that it wasn't even scary and that I could tell the ticket seller what the scariest part was

The old management of the theater here never cared but then they got bought out and the new company started checking IDs at the ticket counter. Generally, I wasn't interested in seeing many movies that were rated R when I was a did anyway as I didn't like horror movies which is what most of them were. I was pretty much interested only in science fiction and action. I'd watch just about anything now though.
