What was "The Burn" and what caused it?

Then what is your explanation for them breaking the warp 5 rule all the time with the newer ships? :p
No one enforces it. It's like driving on the road. When they post a speed limit, 55 MPH really means 70. 65 means 80. Or, if no cops are around, 65 means 90+.

On a more serious note, they advertised when VOY premiered that Voyager had new folding warp nacelles that would preserve the fabric of space. Made no sense to me, but I went along with it. Presumably every ship newer than Voyager had modified warp nacelles and older ships were retro-fitted.

Hell, when they refitted the Enterprise-D before GEN, they probably retrofitted the warp drive to be "space friendly" and used the opportunity (in-universe) to update the bridge and mess up the interior lighting.

Force of Nature was a nice allegory episode idea but the obvious unwillingness to engage further with the idea completely undercut the impact. An off screen tech the tech solution so they could go back to maximum warp was a wimpy way to go; I wish they'd had the courage of their convictions on that point and addressed properly how the society had to adapt to the discovery they were having a serious environmental impact.

There are no "Speed Regulations" in Federation Space.

With advanced Sensors and Comms, there really is no need for "Speed Regulations".

Just simple "Right of Way" passing rules for Space Vessel Traffic.

I'll admit, Omega particle is an idea that crossed my mind. But I would love if it were warp drive tearing apart space thing from Force of Nature. Mostly because I know a guy who always goes on about how they've never again acknowledged the warp 5 speed limit established at the end of the episode (aside from a few other TNG episodes afterwards) and so it'll be fun to point to this and say "see? They're acknowledging it now."

It would have been impossible to enforce the warp limit during the Dominion War. The war alone would have pretty well turned the galaxy to atoms if the events of the TNG ep were upheld.

I really like the Omega particle theory. Makes sense to me, it isn't some political event, it's "Science", and would put Discovery in a unique position with its Spore drive to possibly circumvent such problems. Can't wait to find out.

I believe all the pieces to the mystery have gradually unfolded using Short Treks. We never actually saw Edward Larkin die. We also know that by the time Zora took control of Discovery, Taco Tuesday was a very ritualized meal including replicated sombreros. And yet the people of that era did not know what tacos were, nor what Tuesdays were.

think about it..

:wtf:

Maybe the Galactic Barrier from TOS started moving inward, making travel difficult and nearly impossible (not to mention turning some people into Godlike douches). I feel the barrier was something that deserved more exploration in Star Trek.

And or the center of the galaxy barrier started moving outward. The Cytherians wanted more room.

I’m not sure why something from VOY that was mentioned once and never again would be the reason for the Burn. I’m sure they will come up with their own reason.

My guess it has something to do with the AI from Discovery/Picard. Maybe it floored a million civilizations before Geordi could get to a computer.

The Omega Particle could be interesting. It takes out warp travel and sub space communication cutting off the worlds of the Federation from each other. Starships are destroyed in the process, planets are potentially damaged by debris raining down with no help in recovering. Various civilizations begin to decline or stagnate due to isolation.

Then Discovery shows up and can use the spore drive to reconnect the galaxy, it’s like The Postman in space.

Finally got CBS AA and am watching Disc series 1. After seeing Lorca’s impassioned explanation of Spore Drive, I’m more convinced than ever that THIS is a pivotal plot point for series 3. Warp must be over and SD will reunite the Federation.
