What was "The Burn" and what caused it?

Calypso apparently takes place in the 33rd century (Season 3 of Disco happens in late 32nd).
It does not appear to be the same time period.
And Discovery stated it waited in that nebula for about 1000 years.
This could imply more time travel at some point. Perhaps Georgiou going back to participate in Section 31 (upcoming TV series), and leaving Discovery in a nebula for the crew (and having it to continue in advancing itself using the Sphere data - as we've seen, the data already merged with Discovery to prevent itself from being destroyed or deleted).
They may not have had a choice though because I don't understand

Calypso could also take place in the 42nd century. That is to say, roughly 1,000 years after the end of Discovery.

If 'the burn' is indeed failure of Warp travel... well, it would make more sense the Federation is WAY beyond Warp travel by the 32nd century... or Warp became really fast (outclassing Transwarp and even Slipstream V2 in speed and efficiency).
But then you have transwarp beaming, and a plethora of other options that could be used to zip around the universe even (none of which would need to include spore drive)... however, all of these ARE subspace based technologies.

The spore-drive does not appear to rely on subspace... however, given how subspace is deeply intertwined into Trek technology, you'd think it would have an 'effect' on the spore drive as well.

The writers actually have a fair bit of leeway here, as the particulars of how the various techs interact with subspace haven't been established. They could have short range sensors unaffected and long range sensors taken out if they wanted. Spore drive can be just different enough to not be affected if they want it to be.

Calypso could also take place in the 42nd century. That is to say, roughly 1,000 years after the end of Discovery.

That crossed my mind too (and it would be 'consistent' with Croft referring to the ship as an 'artifact' of sorts.
Though, would that mean the crew would time travel 1000 years into the future and leave Discovery in a nebula where they could retrieve it (knowing that no one would find it there), or that it would be left for someone else?

It will be curious to see how Calypso ties into all this.
Thus far, some of the short Trek's did tie into the main Disco storyline (such as Tilly and Po short trek tying into ending of Season 2)... we could see Calypso do the same for season 3 ending.

We know there's going to be season 4 and 5 of Discovery as well, so Calypso will happen probably near the end of Season 3, or at the end of the series.
Its up to the writers, but I don't think they will necessarily leave us hanging on this tidbit too long.

The sky is red, I don't understand
Past midnight I still see the land
People are saying the woman is damned
She makes you burn with a wave of her hand
The city's ablaze, the town's on fire
The woman's flames are reaching higher
We were fools, we called her a liar
All I hear is "Burn!"

From "Choose Your Pain":
Alright let's start with our mushroom. Prototaxites stellaviatori, a species made up of exotic material found not only in normal space but in a discreet subspace domain known as the mycelial network.

Preusmably it couldn't have happened that long ago - otherwise how would there be so many full-blooded aliens everywhere? Within a few centuries one would presume everyone would just blend together into new races.

Also, we know from Enterprise the 30th century was fine (and the 29th in Voyager).

Actually Daniels was from the 31st century - so unless Daniel's is from an alternate reality, or his faction was not part of the Federation (and I say that because he talked about a monument to the Federation - which could indicate that the Federation in that time either no longer existed or was not the galactic power that it was previously), and Daniels group was a part of something else - we really don't know much about Daniels.

For all we know, Daniels could be working with the remnants of the Federation Section 31. :guffaw:

Maybe the galaxy should have listened to that warp 5 speed limit from "Force of Nature"
That was actually what I was thinking as well. It would make a good analogy to how we are currently ignoring the damage we're doing to our environment here on Earth. We know what's going on, we know how to fix it, we're just not willing as a species to do what we need to do. The same could apply for the strain on subspace by using warp drive.

I had originally thought of some sort of galaxy-wide EMP effect, since EMP is something concerning many people in reality today. But, the more I think about it, something that affected Warp Drive seems a better fit. Asimov repeated many times in his books that hyperspace travel is what made the Galactic Empire possible. Same goes for Guild Navigators allowing hyperspace travel and the resulting Imperium in Dune books. And the Spore Drive is a workaround that nobody had because it was a "lost technology", so it makes Discovery special. This is probably it.

"The galaxy took a hard left" :barf::guffaw:

I really hope the burn is something slower and political rather than some quick apocalypse thing but I assume it will be a control related issue

That idea comes from voyagers technical manual as one of the reasons for the variable geometry warp nacelles. I don't think it was actually ever stated in any of the shows.
You're correct, it was never mentioned in any episodee.

In fact there was an episode where someone asked for Voyagers warp core because of warp drive causing subspace damage, and no one questioned it.
