What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomach?

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

The 6th & 7th seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Joss Whedon was always a bit of a sadistic bastard because he always kept one of his characters happy & one of them miserable, then would dramatically switch that in some surprising way. But in Seasons 6 & 7, he just made everyone miserable all the time.

Andromeda gave me headaches watching the laser shoot outs. Too much sparks, smoke, & slo-mo.

I tried but failed to get into Quantum Leap, SeaQuest DSV, & Space: Above & Beyond.

Stargate: It started out pretty good, and it was for a long time a guilty pleasure (and somehow I'm still watching the tv movies, because I like Vaala and Ben Browder), but my god, there's no drama, ever. Every time they're pressed, the next god-created super weapon out of a machine appears and all is solved again! These people never have to work for anything, everythng just gets tossed in their laps.

I probably enjoy Stargate more than you do but I do have to agree that the Ancient super-weapons are getting tiresome. I mean, was there any good reason at all to watch "The Ark of Truth"?

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

I didn't like:
Lexx
Andromeda
Earth: Final Conflict (Excluding Season 1)
The X-Files
Charmed (I watched this for some reason that still confounds me.)
Flash Gordon
Mutant X

There are however shows that I "liked" but still had problems with as many of these where "guilty pleasures":
SeaQuest DSV
Earth 2
Highlander
TimeTrax
Alien Nation
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys
Xena: Warrior Princess
Smallville

I can honestly say that I like a lot of shows more than I hate them, and even the ones I can't stand, I don't really begrudge them.

I just don't watch them.

I hate when shows just stop trying. It shows.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Me, I'm against bad TV, period. I will not abide bad genre TV, no matter how much I love scifi/fantasy, and I love it MUCH.

There are a few REALLY good non science fiction shows.

The West Wing

The Wire

The Shield

The Sopranos

Deadwood

Rome

Hill Street Blues

Freaks and Geeks

Good stuff, worth your time for good stories, period.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

That is true but people can't make the distinction of it being a separate medium.

They tend to blend the two mediums together (in the case of Batman or Spider-Man, the comics and the movie).

If they are going to be two separate and different continuities, they should change much more than a few minor things.

A good point is: the Ultimate Universe in Marvel vs the regular continuity. There is many, many changes in that, that is totally different than the regular continuity.

I would like to see that carried over to the movies and have -- well another total universe. I believe that both DC and Marvel have different realities (or universes).

The movie continuity should be Universe XXX in Marvel and Universe XX in DC. Make it distinct and completely removed from the comics and create not only a unique universe but something totally different.

While I would genuinely love to see a Marvel Movie Universe (which we are starting to see with the connections between Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk), I find it somewhat annoying when the comic books try make things the way they are in a recently released movie version just because they think people are going to suddenly start buying Amazing Spider-Man.

The most obvious example was giving Spider-Man organic webbing. If Brand New Day got one thing right it was putting his powers back to normal. No bloody stingers, either.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Marvel does have alternate continuities, many of them with their own number for identification. Canonically, the "main" continuity is Earth 616. The newer Marvel movies are forming their own continuity (Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury, Ant Man and Avengers will share continuity with Iron Man/Hulk), but Fantastic Four, X-Men and Spidey are off-limits to Marvel Studios.

I'm aware of that. The Ultimate universe is Earth-1610, the original Squadron Supreme universe is Earth-712, the new Squadron Supreme universe is Earth-31916 and so on and so on.

The post-Crisis, (but possibly pre-Infinite Crisis) DC Universe is considered part of the Marvel Multiverse as well, but doesn't have a known number.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

If you think about it, we're part of the Marvel Multiverse, and Marvel Comics has utter control over all of creation-

Sweet rowdy Rasssilon!

I'VE DISCOVERED THAT STAN LEE IS GOD.

^Another thing I knew already. :)

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Buffy: sorry guys, but it's really a show for angsty teen girls going through puberty.

Nah, you're wrong, but I could see how one might be left with that impression after an initial sampling. It is a coming-of-age tale, after all. Still, there's more than enough story on multiple levels to keep people of all ages entertained.

I just wished they toned down the crying scenes a bit, especially in year 3.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Agreed, that's what I thought about Buffy. Until I watched it in earnest.

The first Whedon show I fell for was Firefly. Came away with the impression that the gent had MAD skillz. After I watched Buffy and Angel, I apologized for making fun of Buffy fans all that time.

Oh, on shows one can't stand...Knight Rider. Wow, that's a bad show. I really think most Glen Larson shows are kiddie shows trying to masquerade as adult faire.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

I never could get into vampires and werewolves meet St Elmo's Fire.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

I don't know, there aren't any shows "I can't stomach" really.
Some shows just son't sound that interesting to me so I don't watch them at all; doesn't mean I can't stomach them.
Sometimes I'll give them a chance but its just not my cup of tea and really can't be bothered watching it every week; doesn't mean I can't stomach them.

Although this thread kinda sums up why I also can't be bothered with this board anymore. Of late all it seems to be is posts from ubergeeks droning on "I hate this, I hate that, I HATE THIS SHIT!!! THIS SHOW IS AWFUL! HOW CAN ANYONE WATCH THIS SHITE!!!" and other such elequant ramblings.
It's embarrassing. Obviously one doesn't expect some love fest, but I'm bored to tears of this hate rally esque crap.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Too numerous to list, and quite frankly, if I can't get into it, I don't watch it and usually forget it exists.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

The last 2 seasons of Xena: bringing new meaning to the phrase "lost the plot".

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

My best friend is a huge fan of Charmed. I am not, although I've tried watching it a couple times based on her devotion. (To some extent, the result is unsurprising. She's a woman. I'm not.) The few times I've watched it, I find the Halliwell sisters charming enough but I can't get over how badly the men on the show are written. They're not really men. They're implausible female fantasies of men-- impossibly saintly husbands or sexy bad boys. It's so bad that I think the show would be better if it just had no men at all.

This isn't to say I can't get into female dominated shows. I think Sex & the City was often brilliant television but that's because it was equally true to life with both its female & male characters.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

There were a few episodes of Charmed that I could tolerate. I saw one tonight that was a Western...strangely enough, not that bad. (That's about the only time I ever thought Shannen Doherty was hot...)

And there was one other one where one of the girls loses her boyfriend - because he's becoming a priest. I wouldn't have expected a show about witchcraft to treat the Christian religion fairly, but this one did. I love the last line the one girl had (can't remember which one) - as she watches her ex-BF being ordained, she says something about "if you're going to lose your boyfriend to another guy, it might as well be the Big Guy".

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Charmed is on one of the many TVs at my gym every day when I'm there doing the treadmill. I have tried and tried (and tried) to watch, but I can truly say this is one show I cannot stomach. I wind up switching over to other TVs, which are all showing either NASCAR or the ongoing "coverage" of the Caylee Anthony story. THAT'S how much Charmed repulses me.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Charmed is one series that has never held any interest for me.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Flash Gordon. Saw one episode, and just spent all the time thinking WTF?

Andromeda. Although I liked the show, it was in my opinion a true wasted opportunity. So much could have been made of it.

Enterprise. Not the show itself, but the fact that just when it started finding it's stride they cancelled it, then gave it the worse series finale ever, and that includes. TOS which never had one!

Doctor Who 'Trial of a Timelord'. What, was it a deliberate attempt to try and destroy the show??

Lord of the Rings. Still can't shake this feeling that they could have combined all three into two movies.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Everyone who posts here is united by their love of Star Trek.

That said, the board is populated by people who also enjoy other programs. Our interest in other genre productions is clearly fragmented, so my question to YOU is:

What SciFi or Fantasy productions do you actively dislike?

Your selections don't have to be films or TV. If you hate the Honor Harrington series of books or you can't stand the Blue Beetle, that's fine too.

Personally, I fucking HATE Firefly. What a pile of poorly written tripe. I was forced by my GF to watch much of the show, and I hated nearly every minute. Serenity was quite possibly the worst film I've ever sat though.

I realize that my above comments will anger some, but I ask that you redirect your rage to YOUR least favourite SciFi or Fantasy film, show, book, comic etc.
Stargate. That's about it. I used to like it, but how it's become, it's dull, it's poor. And they think they can make another series out of it. I hate it.
