What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomach?

Everyone who posts here is united by their love of Star Trek.

That said, the board is populated by people who also enjoy other programs. Our interest in other genre productions is clearly fragmented, so my question to YOU is:

What SciFi or Fantasy productions do you actively dislike?

Your selections don't have to be films or TV. If you hate the Honor Harrington series of books or you can't stand the Blue Beetle, that's fine too.

Personally, I fucking HATE Firefly. What a pile of poorly written tripe. I was forced by my GF to watch much of the show, and I hated nearly every minute. Serenity was quite possibly the worst film I've ever sat though.

I realize that my above comments will anger some, but I ask that you redirect your rage to YOUR least favourite SciFi or Fantasy film, show, book, comic etc.

Buffy and Angel. I have never been able to sit through an entire episode of either of them. Pure tripe, IMO. With that as Whedon's track record, it's a wonder I gave Firefly a chance, but I did and loved it.

Charmed is another one I can't stomach.

That is hilarious. My girlfriend hangs out with these Browncoat fanatics all the time. So that means I hang out with them too, but I'm not a fan.

Stargate (tv series). I've never seen a duller successful sci-fi franchise. Everything about it radiates dullness... the actors... the look and feel of the show... the military base interior... the army fatigues everybody's wearing... even the voices of the actors are dull! When Ben Browder and Claudia Black became regulars on this show, they became dull. It's like this giant sucking vortex of dull.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

I suppose Andromeda might qualify. I don't really know it well enough to actively dislike it, and I don't care to, though.

I don't understand active dislike for a genre TV show. I mean, sure, maybe it's no good, but it's still genre and that automatically makes it better than 90% of the rest.

Probably the closest I came was Enterprise. I really wanted to like that, and in fact some of it was pretty decent, but overall....massive disappointment.

Oh, and for the record, Angel one of the best long-running shows I've seen. At least as good as Farscape, anyway; probably DS9 too. There are a few things that top it, though.

Buffy, Angel, and Stargate. Major bleah!

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Actively dislike may be a bit harsh, but I've never been able to get into any of the Stargates. I really wanted to like the original show since I liked the movie (back then, anyway ;) and it had MacG...Richard Dean Anderson.
However, was never able to connect with the characters or the stories. The most simple way I can put it is that it just seemed a bit silly. Not totally silly so that it would be a great laugh, but just silly enough so that I could never really sit through an episode. Add to that the fact that I always felt it looked cheap, and you've got a show I never enjoyed (hence I never watched it with the exception of looking into an episode every so often to make sure I still disliked it).

Buffy/Angel is about the same, I suppose. I could never see the attraction at all. Thus I never got into it. Again, I wouldn't say I actively disliked it, I just could never connect.

I suppose I'd have to say I did actively dislike Voyager (after about five years of hoping it would finally get good) and Enterprise (which put me off right from the start with no real hope of redemption).
I know they're both part of a franchise but I thought it fair to single them out since I do actively dislike them as per the definition of this thread.

That was me until I I randomly decided to give them each an actual, fair chance. Turns out they were much better than I had expected. Especially Angel.

I mean, how can you not be intrigued by the concept of a show where the good guy is a monster and the bad guys are lawyers?

"Automatically makes it better"? Hardly. A good show is a good show. An ordinary show is an ordinary show. Genre is irrelevant. I see no reason to watch shows that don't appeal to me simply because they fit into any genre, SF / F included.

I won't use the word "hate" about a TV show, and even "actively dislike" is a bit much. But for the purposes of this thread I'll name Firefly and nBSG. Whatever it is that appeals to people about these shows simply does not work for me at all.

I can't stomach any of the Whedon shows.

You're right, I was speaking in hyperbole. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the fact that they're genre automatically makes them 90% more likely to be given a chance in the first place, at least by me.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

I never made it through more than 10 minutes of any episode of Buffy, and never made it through more than 2 minutes of any Stargate, except the movie, and I regret that it got more of my time than that.

I'm sure it will come to no surprise to anyone around here, but I actively dislike the Terminator franchise, but that is because I adore The Terminator and think that all which has followed the original movie has been formulaic rehash trash.

I can't say I dislike Batman: The Animated Series, but despite the copious amounts of online love the show gets, it mostly only ever generated a 'meh' from me.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Star Wars.

It doesn't grab me in the least.

Lord of the Rings too.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

"Highlander: The Series." My husband loves this TV show. He has all of them on DVD. I personally can't freakin' stand it. I find it stupid beyond belief.

He also really liked "Buffy" and "Angel." I found them to be just OK, but liked Buffy far better than Angel. He thinks they're fantastic.

I never could stand "Charmed" or "Smallville," but then I've only seen a few episodes of each.

I was on an airplane last year, and saw the last "Fantastic Four" movie. What a steaming pile. FFS, did ANYONE like that film? I thought it was pure torture.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

^For the record, I gave FF five stars and FF:RotSS four stars.

I'm not a fan of Firefly, and everything I've heard about the new BSG has been so negative that I will never watch that show. Even those who say it's of good quality say it's depressing.

I must admit, Highlander: The Series is a guilty pleasure for me. I KNOW it's bad, but I still love it, esp seasons 2-4.

I recently got a collection of short stories by George RR Martin in AudioBook format from the library. I was pretty psyched when I found out the several of them were read by Adrian Paul

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Star Wars.
There's one I forgot.

I could also add DS9, Buffy and Angel, and neither of the Stargates did anything for me. But the two I named earlier are actually about the only TV shows I've even come close to actively disliking.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

With Star Wars (the original trilogy), I enjoy all three movies, but I don't think it's as nearly as good as many people make it out to be and they're far down on my all time favorite science-fiction films.
