What is your favourite thriller?

Chris Johnston, personally, I wouldn't include sci-fi movies in the thriller genre, but you are right, of course. These movies do contain a lot of thriller elements.

That is, unless we include The Dark Knight as a thiller, and not just a superhero movie. If we do, the The Dark Knight wins.

Well, I guess I was never clear on what the definition of a "thriller" was, so after looking at the IMDb's Top 50 list, I looked it up on Wikipedia and, apparently, a whole lot of great Sci-Fi meets the criteria!
Impossible for me to narrow it down to just one favorite, though.

The word 'thriller' covers so many movies that it's hard to pick one. It's also hard not to stray into action movie territory (don't Die Hard and Lethal Weapon contain thrills abound?). But some which come to mind are:

The Talented Mr Ripley

Eastern Promises

North By Northwest

The Departed

In The Line of Fire.

The Talented Mr. Ripley is a highly underrated gem. Probably Anthony Minghella's best film.

I would have to say The Shining one of the great thriller of all time, Jack Nicholson is crazy hell in that movie

L.A. Confidential - The period, the characters, the dialogue, the story, the acting; it's all great. I still find it hard to believe that this lost out to The Love Boat in the Oscars.

For me, the best political thriller ever is No Way Out with Kevin Costner.

Martin Scorsese also has a knack for creating thrillers where he puts you in the mind of a character who doesn't have all of his nuts and bolts, like Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver or in Cape Fear. He enjoys creating hyper-realistic scenarios involving usually normal people in extraordinary lives, like in either Casino or more prominently Goodfellas. However, Scorsese's films aren't traditional thrillers, but are more character analysis's that evolve gradually over time.

His most recent movie, 'Shutter Island', is an excellent thriller in the same vein as his previous movies. Very well crafted and acted with an overwhelming sense of dread and mystery that's really head-and-tails above most filmmakers today.
