Sometimes, I really think the best fanfiction is the one written when a series was running (and maybe just after that). There's something unique in it, as people usually don't fell so constrained by canon when the series is still running.
What is your favorite pairing involving Kes (or do you think none is)?

You also run the risk of the next season/episode completely ruining your fic's momentum tho. I mean yeah, you can always claim it's now an AU, but ugh, I'd be annoyed by something like that.... but shortly after a show works wonderfully, I definitely agree with that! You can fix things and you also have a big audience because the show is still fresh on everyone's minds AND they're looking for more stories that canon can't/won't give them.
Currently, new Lower Decks fics seems to have quite a popularity.... Also, fics written between Seasons (some of fics I most liked were written between Season 4 - 5 of DS9 or at the start of Season 5, I am not exactly sure...)
I also should say, the very idea of pairing Kes for me depends on how much she's trained to use her powers. If she is the way she was in Voy 1 - 3, pairing her is fine. However, if one write her as being trained to use them more, she should not be paired up romantically, as she could start to use her powers for her relationship, and ignoring other people.
It helps that interest in the series is a lot heavier, and so you find more of an audience.
The massive co-op writing project set in the Potter-verse that I founded and helped direct*... it ended not too long after the lsst book of the series was written.

I'm rewatching DS9 now, and, God help me, I think my favorite character there is Garak! Just saw the old boy last night in The Wire, where we find out his first name, Garak.
Ok, I'll read fanfic with Kes dating Garak. I'm onboard!
Kes is all about honesty but I don't find her naive. She appears to be very smart.
And maybe she would be perfect for Garak, someone who could make him become a better person and to help him recover from his past.
But honestly, I have no plans of coming up with some fanfic which includes a romance between Kes and Garak. At least not for now.
As for Kes, she's good as she is right now and with that I mean the scenario I placed her in while I was restoring the character from the destruction which was about to ruin her in thwo different Voyager episodes, The Gift and that other one which name isn't even worth to mention.
But I will write something in which Garak is restored from the fate in some stupid recent book where the character was ruined.
And I will restore Gowron as well!
The Kes-Garak relationship is actually a little joke which I do throw in when relationships are mentioned. Mostly because Kes and Garak are my all time Star Trek favorites.
Always a bit funny to see the reaction to it!

Well, maybe not romantic, but seeing Kes and Garak teaming up to do something (like learn what happened to Barash's people) would be a good idea.
I could see Garak manipulating Kes to get her to use her powers for some devious espionage. Kes working for the Obsidian Order and the Cardassian state!

Or what it would be like when jealous Neelix tried to get her back with some dirty tricks. Neelix couldn't hold a candle to Garak's deviousness in such a situation.
I think Kes changed over time. Season 3 Kes is muhc more smart and lessnaive than Season 1 Kes. Sometimes, Season 3 Kes behaved more mature than some other charatcers in later seasons.
Neelix's machinations would backfire tremendously. He might just "disappear."
I think Neelix was really lucky that Tom Paris wasn't the man he thought him to be... At least wasn't already.

Then I have a question: If Kes was not so fast aging, and especially if her lifespan was extended (like it happened in Lynx's stories) and she spent a lot of time time - travelling before returning to Voyger so she would be now chrnologically adult by human years, would that make it less problematic?
Yes. Under those circumstances, either Tom or Neelix would be a worthy match for her.
