What is the chance of one last hurrah for TNG?

Much as I loved Next Gen and would really enjoy another film with that cast, I can't say I'm aching for it. They had 7 seasons on TV and four movies. They weren't cancelled before reaching their potential or cut down in their prime. They went as far as they could. The last year or two of the series were not nearly on par with the mid-run. There were some gems, but for the most part, they were running out of gas before it ended. It was a great and legendary run, and I think they said all they really had to say. Luckily, the general public didn't pay much attention to the movies, so TNG is still well regarded and untainted.

Man, I wish I had 7 seasons of the original series to go back and watch, or three more years of an improved Enterprise. That show got ripped off.

I think it's probably a good thing that it's moving at a slow pace. We had Trek for so long from 1986 to 2005, sometimes with multiple series running at once. It was too much, general audiences got sick of it, and in all honesty, the shows and movies started sucking mightily themselves. Now we've had a good movie with the reboot film and I think they're playing it smart by not flooding the market with Trek again. As much as I want more, I want that "more" to be of high quality, not just garbage shat out by the studios like VOY and ENT and the TNG films were.

So whose fault is that? Viewers were turned off due to Paramount's own poor production/handling of the franchise.

It is the studio's fault and I think that is what he is saying. But part of the reason the product was substandard was because there was so much of it. I, for one, prefer that the studio be mindful of the product being put out and make sure there is always more demand than supply going forward.

Though I was bummed by the cancellation of the four 'Abramsverse' novels that were suppose to be published this past summer.

A full blown Hollywood movie featuring the TNG cast is most likely never going to happen. Someone might be able to use new technology to do a fan-created full CGI one in about 10 or 15 years when the technology and the rights are cheaper - with CGI actors - but Stewart, Frakes, et al., are done, except maybe as a cameo in ST:2 or something.

I have been working on it for a few years now, and I spent as much of my spare time on the project as I can... It's evolving... It started as a rather silly idea, and has turned into a 1080p some 96 minutes film.
I hope to finish it one day, but since I have a job and a private life, it is hard to invest much more time into this, than I do now.
Stay tuned, it is a work of heart, and I will not let it go...

I have doubts that a rebooted TNG would bear any resemblance to the current TNG. While it was a very popular series, I don't think it has the iconic appeal of the original trek. A new TNG would be an update from NuTrek and would have full creative freedom.

This was due to Gene Roddenberry. Roddenberry had become very annoyed that the original Star Trek had become centered around the "stars" Nimoy (Spock) and Shatner (Kirk).

So, the ST:TNG characters deliberately had all the "character traits" of Kirk and Spock split up among them.

The character of Kirk was split between Picard & Riker.

The character of Spock was split between Riker, Troi, Data, and Worf.

I generally agree with you, but many of the characters will probably be similar (only the names have been changed to protect the innocent!)

I'm sure there will be a Spock/Data/7of9/T'pol character - but he/she/it will have a new name.

the characters of TNG weren't good for a movie because they weren't individual clones of Kirk and Spock? That doesn't make much sense.

And remember guys, when you go on about what a "failure" the TNG movies were that there were two solid hits, one break even/disappointment, and one box office bomb. That's not a terrific record, but not a terrible one. The TNG movie series looks worse in retrospect because it ended on a low note.


It's kind of like how the TOS series might have been perceived had it ended on TFF.

Even though I watch the theatrical films VERY rarely, TNG ended with AGT for me. Abrams ST film blew all the TNG films out of the water, IMHO (DUCKS) and I'm a first run fan of ALL ST series. TNG is done.

Yeah, that's my thinking as well. It definitely would have been nice to see the TNG movies go out on a higher note than Nemesis, but I always saw those movies as just bonus episodes anyway, or an "epilogue" to the main series.

Agreed... although I think that was mostly due to the dull, lifeless Berman style than anything. A new TV series running concurrently with the movies could totally work if it had the same kind of energy and style as Abrams' Trek.

I agree with what you're saying, although lately I've been wondering about a new animated TV show. I've started watching a lot of the new animated Marvel/DC programs and some of them are rather impressive - particularly Green Lantern is rather reminiscent of some of the stories done in Star Trek.

An animated show could be done even as an alternate history Star Trek.

I agree with what you say about series fatigue though. They DID make a good comeback movie and I think it would be a mistake to flood the market with another average series.
