What is Star Trek Discovery's rewatchability?

Discovery is what brought me back.

I was July 2001.........Took about a 10 year break and Discovery brought me back as well. The hate for Enterprise is what drove me away, ironically when I came back I saw people who hated Enterprise in 2005 talking about it like it was classic Trek when I came back......#fans

Been struggling with this (thread title) because rewatching Trek is the best - it's where the details are soaked in and true reflection and analysis can begin. I was tickled during the first run of Discovery - it was scratching my itch and it was so great to have Trek back on TV.

Upon attempting to rewatch Season 1 in anticipation of Season 2, I'm finding it very difficult to digest the material the second time around. Which confounds me - it can't be the serialization because DS9 and ENT had that in spades. I find my mind drifting and wandering in a way that it simply *doesn't happen* the millionth time I see a TNG or DS9 that I've seen so often I can recite the character's lines. I'm thinking about laundry and work emails I need to write and so forth. The escape is harder to reach for me.

The Vulcan Hello is the first episode, but in many ways Discovery really starts from Context is For Kings. I made it to the Choose Your Pain episode - which was still good - but I didn't want to sit through Lethe again so plan on skipping ahead to watch the latter half with the MU storyline. I think that starts from Despite Yourself, 1x10.

TL;DR I loved Disco the first time around but the rewatch isn't as entertaining as I'd hoped.

Which is odd. I just rewatched it, prepping for season 2 and found it was a much better binge watch than it was waiting week to week......for ME.

I've re-watched TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT countless times but I haven't had the urge to re-watch Discovery once. The show no doubt got better as it went on and I will watch season 2 but it just doesn't match up to what came before in the franchise.

The Serial nature of the show also doesn't help with random re-watches like I do with the older shows via Netflix every now & again.

The fact that it doesn't "match up to what came before in the franchise" is what makes me find it so interesting. There's been a LOT of Trek over 50 years. I don't need more of the same. I need different visions and takes on the franchise to stay interested.

DSC is like TWOK in that respect, almost a complete retooling of how we thought about Star Trek.

I've been rewatching this week after resubbing for watch the Short Treks, and watching it knowing about Lorca is a treat. So much of what he says has double meanings.

I'm doing my own rewatch right now and am loving the series even more than I did the first time. I also have to agree that knowing all of the secrets this time around is fun.

Thats probably part of it.
For me, I cant be reminded of how off Cannon DISCOs timeline is. (Time crystals, space whales, Tardi-drive, in no particular order). Im sorry if by answering this threads question, some individuals will be offended by my response.
I totaly like the new sets, and having a show to look forward again. Time will tell if there is any profitability in syndicated reruns. As far as S1 storyline, not a chance. Only the paying established fan base will continue to support Star Trek Disco. NOW improve the story in S2 and onward, you might have a chance in re-runs.
As ive posted before on another thread. I would love to see the story about the Calypso short. But thats in another time setting.

I just started a rewatch myself, hopefully I can finish before next week. I am enjoying the pilot more than I did before.

Now I got the Blu Rays I am on my first full rewatch but several episodes I have already seen 3 or 4 times.

Knowing how the series plays out I find I am getting an extra level from some of the performances.
Lorca just makes a lot more sense this time around. I think Jason Isaacs did a fantastic job.

This is pretty much my story, except Nemesis is what finally broke me. I don't mind the Abrams films, but I don't find them engaging and I've only rewatched them a handful of times. I was done with Trek until Discovery came along, and can't wait for it to come back on the 17th.

I too remember the hate for Enterprise and before that , Voyager. It's hilarious to see the historical revisionism and hypocrisy on display by some of the fanbase.

I don't think many people hold Voyager (or a good chunk of Enterprise) in high esteem, do they? There's just less reason to complain about them, because those shows are off the air and have been for a very long time.

For me, those shows are a compelling argument not to accept mediocre Trek in the hope that "Trek shows improve after season 2."

I don't think the weak parts of Voyager or Enterprise are 'bad' per se, I just think they're both excruciatingly dull at times. And I'd much rather have exciting with uneven writing any day.

Voyager is an odd duck for me. I dislike more episodes in it than any other series, but I think I have more favourite episodes in it than any other series.

DS9 might edge over it in favourites, but not sure. I haven't actually counted.

This might surprise you, but I concur.

From a writerly perspective, I think the average VOY episode was better done than Discovery's first season. But so much of the remainder of the show - the pacing, the direction, the acting, etc - was generally inferior to Discovery. Thus VOY was a chore for me to get through on rewatch - I literally had to force myself to finish the series for the sake of completeness. In contrast, Discovery almost always entertained in the moment even if there were times I groaned and rolled my eyes. A mixture of enjoyment and exasperation is better than nothing at all.

Both series are far more popular than you think they are.
