What is Star Trek Discovery's rewatchability?

Enterprise was actually becoming a decent show by season 4, it's a shame it never reached season 5.

 

I've tried to rewatch the season twice, but so far I fall asleep to he first episode.

It's weird because I was so excited when it first started, and watched each episode as soon as I could, and I also can't wait for season two.

I'm sure I'll rewatch it someday. I seem to love wading through the other Star Trek series when they have bad periods, knowing better things are coming.

 

It really should have improved on season 2. Things only drastically changed with the season finale “Expanse” because the ratings dropped so hard. Though many say TNG didn’t get good until 3, there was a considerable uptick in 2, especially with an episode like “The Measure of a Man” which is easily the first bonafide Trek classic for that series.

 

Given I am on my fifth rewatch of S1 I'd say pretty good.

 

I thought Enterprise’s fourth season was pretty good, but I would not hold that show up as a model for future franchise outings.

The only Trek shows that have actually followed the “improve greatly after two seasons” fan wisdom are TNG and, to a lesser degree, DS9, IMO. That’s a poor sample size for predicting future performance, especially when an equal number of shows subsequently failed to follow the “pattern.”

(And now we have an entirely different set of showrunners on Discovery. No one tried to make predictions for Beyond based on Star Trek III.)

 

Despite consensus, I think TNG is the only Trek series that really follows the "give it two seasons!" pattern. At least from a quality standpoint. For the rest of the series, it's really just a matter of divided opinion and how sharply divided it might be.

DS9's first season was my least favorite of the series, and I don't even think it's bad so much as just there. Just have the first two hours, the last two hours, throw in "Dax" from the middle, and I think I'm all set. "Dramatis Personae" and "Bable" are guilty pleasures, though.

DS9's second season, OTOH, I think is underrated. The first season felt like every other episode was "There's a murder on the station!", while the second season, they got into the nitty-gritty of focusing on the Bajorans, the Cardassians, the Occupation, the Maquis, setting up the Dominion, and delving deeper into the characters. It's also the season where Sisko gives his "It's easy to be a Saint in Paradise" speech. That's the speech that firmly sets DS9 philosophically apart from TNG. If anything I actually thought the third season was a slight step down from the second.

 

I’d agree with that. The two-season thing is pretty much a fan myth, IMO.

 

Which I directly attribute to the lead being on a popular Netflix show.

 

No true Star Trek fan should be able to even finish this series.

I think what fans ar really saying is that they liked each shows season 2 more than season 1, and season 3 more than season 2 and so forth. What people like is not a "myth'.

Eh, nothing wrong with that. There were episodes I really liked from the first season, but I've no real desire to rewatch any of them. Doesn't mean I (or you) like them any less, just... you're ready to see what's next, maybe.

 

Actually, you were correct in a roundabout manner.

 

I'm about half way through my rewatch. Lorca is way more interesting the second time around. He's clearly obsessed with Burnham, trying to manipulate her into being closer to him while trying to maintain his cover. There are moments where he almost slips up because of his obsession with Burnham like when he didn't want her to go on the Klingon ship. He only relents when she mentions it being more about her than the mission. There's also Admiral Cornwall's references to him being different after losing his last ship, which is when he took over for his double.

 

Mainly just for Issac’s performance.

 

He really sells that he's having to craft lies on the fly and maintain them all.

 

Lorca was great. By far the most interesting part of the show for me.
