Spoilers What If...? season two discussion thread

While I love Halley Atwell

But i Want more of a stand alone, like Nebulas this season. I'm okay finishing off her story in S3 but don't focus on her.
I give S1 a 9 where I give S2 a 6 or 7. .

Lots of great insights on how they developed the season (and glimpses of season 3). Overall, I think they made all of the right choices, especially for the Kahhori and 1602 episodes (unsurprisingly, the latter was always intended as a homage than anything else).

I understand why they changed their plans accordingly, but I would love to see "What If...The Grandmaster got the Infinity Gauntlet?" some day. Just imagine the kind of hijinks Jeff Goldblum would get into!

As much as I love the Nebula episode, I kind of wish they stuck with the dark ending because that feels more fitting.

I couldn't even tell that wasn't Annette Benning

What surprised me was that it was(n't) Annette Bening circa 1988 (as in she just hit thirty) as opposed to the thirty-years-older version that died in 616 a year later. Did they de-age her just so she could flirt with her 'American President' co-star?

I wonder if they'd ever consider doing an episode of What If...? That was a straight adaptation of Avengers #1 (1963) ?

With the usual voice cast of course.

Wouldn't even have to be a straight adapt, just a classic 60's era adventure with the OG Avengers (usual voice cast)... throw in an appearance by Spider-Man, maybe the X-Men (with 90's animated series voices)... I would say 'then unveil the Fantastic Four's new cast in animated voice form,' but that ain't happening until they appear in live-action for the first time.

I absolutely loved Kahhori and her story. As noted by Uatu, what made Kahhori so distinctive was her conviction to stay true to her nature in the face of the cruelty of evil and the riches of the good. She helped shaped not just her own world, but also helped the Mohawk descendants who benefited from the Space Stone in their Sky World. By bringing those two worlds together, she completely changed the course of history and hopefully for the better.

I love the craft and dedication and care in bringing this episode together. I'm thrilled that the showrunners wisely brought in the proper people to help shape this episode on all levels, from the writing to the music to the artwork to the acting, which helped properly represent the Mohawk people, their culture, and their history. I hope this is only just the beginning of Kahhori and her story and that we'll see more of her, not just in What If...?, but well beyond the show to further tell her story in all forms.

My only complaint about the episode, and I knew this was coming thanks to the opening credits, was the closing scene with Supreme Strange arriving to collect Kahhori for whatever greater goal that he has now (which undoubtedly will involve Captain Carter and 1602).

Oh, right, duh, of course. That makes much more sense. Especially considering how 1602 originated in the comic story (I mean that Peggy's arrival there is a wink to that, not as the reason for 1602's origins). I feel like a dunce for not seeing that before.

Why did this episode feature the Mohawk encountering Spanish conquistadors in upstate New York? Did the MCU have to be that sloppy?

What was sloppy about that? The Mohawk people were historically located there and in this alternate history, the Spanish Conquistadors went there instead, chasing rumors of the Fountain of Youth (which happened because of the Power Stone landing there instead).

It's sloppy because it invites questions about what happened in Europe to make the Spanish go there instead. Were the English and French not exploring/exploiting powers? Did Odin's losing the Power Stone have some reverberations that we don't see? Did the English and French go to the Caribbean instead? For an episode titled "What if Kahhori Reshaped the World?" it seems like the world has already been reshaped without her.

The Spanish didn't go to the Caribbean because of rumors of the Fountain of Youth, we connect the search for the Fountain of Youth with conquistadors because... never mind, it's not that important.

The point is, for an episode that put so much into faithful representation of the Mohawk people, it felt like a lazy way to give some obvious cartoon villains in Spanish conquistadors - especially Queen Isabella at the end, a powerful and somewhat familiar woman to the audience for Kahoori to appear in front of.

The French would have been a more interesting adversary; it's not as though they wouldn't have been interested in such rumors.

Anyway, that's my only beef with the episode but it nagged me throughout; Kahhori herself of course was awesome.

I can understand that feeling, but at the end of the day you can make similar questions about just about any alternate universe scenario.

Ultimately it's more a problem with the title not really matching the story being told, but that's a problem almost all of these episodes have because the 'What if... x?" title format is just awkward and hard to pull off effectively without spoiling the episodes.
