What If: Captain Riker of the USS Voyager

Would he try to sit on the Captains chair backwards?

It's like his mommy didn't teach him how chairs are supposed to be used.

(Died in child birth? Or ran from sleazy Kyle?)

I put it down to mental scarring from his father's hideous one-piece future business suits and wanting to hide The Bulge any way possible.

Kyle Riker was a beastly individual only a Griffin like Pulaski could love.

Edward Montgomery, on the other hand is a pretty awesome for a drunk billionaire.

On a slightly more serious note, what if Chakotay had been replaced by Tom Riker? The Riker spirit, but with more of a need to prove himself, and maybe restore himself in Starfleet's eyes.

I feel Chakotay could have been so much more. The Native American heritage thing was fine and all but you'd never tell he was ex-Maquis if you missed the first few episodes and a few others sprinkled throughout Voyager's run.

^They kind of abandoned the whole Maquis VS Starfleet thing pretty early on. Which is a shame, because that angle could've made Voyager unique. I thought it was a very solid show, but it could've really stood out from the pack.

I wonder if Kathy reminded any one that they were two years from Borg Space when her entire crew of Maquis farmers turned down multithousand acre plots to sow as they saw fit in the 37s?

It's clear that he had no idea David existed until she told him.

Otherwise he would have totes gone to all of David's baseball games.

When they first met he asked Carol "is that David" so he obviously knew who he was and later on they say how he stayed away as he promised.

Its a shame that UPN didn't allow them to be a bit more out of the box, there was a perfect opportunity for some tense serialised story lines in the vein of BSG or SGU. They didn't have to ever take it that far (ie attempted mutinies) but they could have come close and brought it back, learning to work together even if it was only during the course of the first season.

The show we got we didn't even get the (former) terrorist crew having an issue to wearing Starfleet uniforms only some minor grumbling about rules and regs.

When I clicked on this thread, I was expecting a somewhat intelligent discussion, about how Voyager would have been different, with Riker in command. I was... Disappointed. This is downright embarrassing, does this website have moderators, or not?

Anyway, to answer the OP, if Riker would have been in command of Voyager, he would not have gotten along as well with Chakotay, Tuvok, or Tom Paris. I don't think he wouldn't have allowed Kes and Nelix to stay aboard. He wouldn't have made an alliance with the Borg, which means he wouldn't have picked up Seven of Nine. And, without having Kes to throw Voyager beyond Borg space, or Seven to help fight the Borg, Voyager probably wouldn't have made it back.

On the other hand, Riker would have been more likely to use the array to get back home in the first place, possibly condemning the Ocampa to die.

This sub forum does seem to get off topic more than the TNG, maybe all that time in the delta quadrant.

I actually think Riker would have gotten along with Chakotay just fine, atleast once they got past the Marquis thing at the beginning. Any reason you think they would have clashed? Both Chakotay and Riker seemed pretty bad ass in their dealings with the Borg. I could see them being friends.

Tom Paris would be jealous of Riker getting all the ladies.

So you're saying he is boring?

As long as we're fantasizing, what if Riker was Janeway's 2nd instead of Chatokay. How would he and Janeway worked together.

Just have it be Tom Riker, Maquis leader, in place of Chak. That would have pandered to the TNG Forever in my Heart crowd and it wouldn't actually be Riker.

Though I guess I have to say I prefer Chak to that option. That preference may be knee jerk however, I don't have any animosity towards Chak.

I honestly think if Thomas Riker had been in place of Chatokay people would have spent the entire show waiting for Janeway to get herself killed leaving the Captains Chair open for Riker.

That and there would have been two Tom's on board both being ace pilots.

I like the cast as they were some of them simply deserved a little more time to shine (and Harry needed an extra pip on that collar!)
