Spoilers What happened the night the Ben turned on Luke

screamed hysterically for a bit, then jumped off a space station.

I’m not judging him for screaming hysterically. Honest.

But in ROTJ, even his dear old dad reacted to:
(1)a(nother) lost arm
(2) an offer to change sides
(3) some unexpected family revelations
...with slightly more dignity.

Just sayin.:shifty:

He did just find out his whole life was basically a lie to some degree. So, yeah, that's going to be a *little* shattering.

Luke: Am I even Owen and Beru’s real nephew?!
Obi-Wan: ...
Obi-Wan: From a certain point of vi-
Luke: ARRRRRGH!!!

I never really thought about it before, but I realize now that he wasn't.

They are his step-uncle and step-aunt. Anakin's mother was married to Owen's father, with makes Owen Anakin's step-brother.

I was blanking on a layman’s term for it.

Although admittedly, ‘Jumped off a city. No, not a building. The entire city,’ does sound even more over-the-top dramatic.

And Anakin’s Master (like-a-brother) reacted to his darkness by amputating most of his limbs off, and leaving his helpless, limbless, ass to slowly burn alive.
Do mass child killers deserve anything less? Pat on the back?

Truly, there’s no other options between those two extremes. And apparently they ‘deserve’ about...five offered second chances, hugs, redemption, and an eternal Jedi bro hangout.

And personally? I think the movies themselves have thoroughly displayed that particular choice was pointlessly sadistic (with an extra emphasis on ‘pointless‘), and generally dumb as all fuck.

It’s very easy to argue that Obi-Wan was framed as taking the wrong path by acting in ‘anger’ and ‘vengeance’ (as opposed to ‘protection,’) as evidenced by the fact he achieved nothing besides making everything worse.

Also, goalposts move much?
You: Having literal evil inside him or not, Ben’s a kid. Luke shouldn’t have been freaked out by a kid.
Me: Anakin was a kid with darkness inside him.
You: Yeah. But Anakin actually did shit.
Me: And Anakin’s Master responded to said shit by hacking him to itty bitty pieces and setting him on fire. Ben’s decided not to. Because Ben hadn’t done shit.
You: You don’t think child killers deserve that?!
(Ironically enough, Kylo is a mass childkiller. On screen wise, a worse one than Anakin.)

As I've given thought to what a Better Prequel could look like, I've considered that while this makes more sense than the original idea that Owen was Obi-Wan's brother (which of them changed their name? Why'd he have such strong opinions about Anakin, a total stranger?), the most sensible idea would be that Beru was Anakin's sister. Her maiden name could be Skywalker, explaining the "Lars" thing, and it'd also account for why she was fonder of Anakin that Owen was.

Before the prequels, that’s what I’d always assumed was the intention.

I'm going to have to revisit the radio drama but I thought the implication was that Owen was Obi-Wan's brother...hmmm? I can't remember though.

As I alluded, that was stated in the script and novelization of "Return of the Jedi," when Obi-Wan explained his point of view to Luke. It was cut from the actual film, but as was the style at the time, was regarded as canonical until contradicted by AotC. The first place I remember seeing it was a "Who's Who in Star Wars" chart in the lifestyle section of the local newspaper when The Phantom Menace came out.

I don't know if anything was ever said before RotJ one way or another about Luke's relation to the Larses beyond "nephew(?)."
