He did just find out his whole life was basically a lie to some degree. So, yeah, that's going to be a *little* shattering.I’m not judging him for screaming hysterically. Honest.
But in ROTJ, even his dear old dad reacted to:
(1)a(nother) lost arm...with slightly more dignity.
(2) an offer to change sides
(3) some unexpected family revelations
Just sayin.

Do mass child killers deserve anything less? Pat on the back?
Truly, there’s no other options between those two extremes. And apparently they ‘deserve’ about...five offered second chances, hugs, redemption, and an eternal Jedi bro hangout.
And personally? I think the movies themselves have thoroughly displayed that particular choice was pointlessly sadistic (with an extra emphasis on ‘pointless‘), and generally dumb as all fuck.
It’s very easy to argue that Obi-Wan was framed as taking the wrong path by acting in ‘anger’ and ‘vengeance’ (as opposed to ‘protection,’) as evidenced by the fact he achieved nothing besides making everything worse.
Also, goalposts move much?

And yet Anakin is redeemable but Luke's momentarily weakness is irredeemable?
As I've given thought to what a Better Prequel could look like, I've considered that while this makes more sense than the original idea that Owen was Obi-Wan's brother (which of them changed their name? Why'd he have such strong opinions about Anakin, a total stranger?), the most sensible idea would be that Beru was Anakin's sister. Her maiden name could be Skywalker, explaining the "Lars" thing, and it'd also account for why she was fonder of Anakin that Owen was.
That would have worked really well.

Before the prequels, that’s what I’d always assumed was the intention.
I'm going to have to revisit the radio drama but I thought the implication was that Owen was Obi-Wan's brother...hmmm? I can't remember though.
As I alluded, that was stated in the script and novelization of "Return of the Jedi," when Obi-Wan explained his point of view to Luke. It was cut from the actual film, but as was the style at the time, was regarded as canonical until contradicted by AotC. The first place I remember seeing it was a "Who's Who in Star Wars" chart in the lifestyle section of the local newspaper when The Phantom Menace came out.
I don't know if anything was ever said before RotJ one way or another about Luke's relation to the Larses beyond "nephew(?)."
