What happened after Voyager returned home?

You know who the best counsellor on Star Trek was? Not Troy, not Ezri...It was Guinan.

Tom Paris was pretty good too, now that I think about it. He counselled the Doctor, Tuvok, Kim, and even B'elanna.

Tom seems to be a pretty good shrink for Lanna actually, he's always listening and giving her advice.

Listening and telling someone what you think is not the same as being a psychiatrist

True.

I still think it would have been a good idea for them to have made a hologram that was a shrink, considering the things that they had been through. They had basically the whole data base at their disposal.

I don't remember who Guinean is.

Tom was pretty good also.

It was pretty well established that people were not entirely comfortable with holograms in that function. People were against using an EMH. To quote Beverly Crusher as she activated one "I swore I'd never use one of these"

It took a long time to make the first EMH and as we saw it wasn't great. Starfleet stopped using them and other models had to be designed. It wouldn't be just something they could whip up quickly

And yet, they didn't have a problem with characters from the holo novels. Odd...

That's a bit hypocritical of them, not using the emh.

As for whipping one up, they did it with the holo novels (like fair haven), so it shouldn't have been that difficult to make one.

You don't need experience or education to be a shrink, you just need to be compassionate and have a listening hear. I listen and give my friends advice all the time, and I never trained as a shrink. I just happen to have that type of personality to help people.
I beg to differ. You DO need experience. You need to know how to guide your patient, based on their responses. The "free for all" approach of "just listening" is only part of the solution. One needs to be a mindful, experienced listener. Otherwise, you end up on the "psychology forever" train... no end goal. And pocket money for the shrink.

Having people who are good listeners is essential, no doubt about it. And that works for 90% of the time, for healthy individuals who are just dealing with troubles of the day. Psychologists are really meant for people who have a dysfunction. They cannot "self correct". Even having the support of family/friends may not be enough.

As long as a hologram can be developed enough to be considered a "sentient being", there's no reason why they couldn't become a counselor. In essence the VOY EMH became one. He was terrible in the beginning. Snarky and acerbic with no good bedside manner. In the final seasons of the show, the EMH became his own person... and a great one at that.

Nods, makes sense.

Ah, ok. That makes sense. I've always felt more comfortable talking with someone that I know. I find that shrinks just repeat what you say back to you, which is not exactly what I would consider helpful.

Yea, I like how the doctor evolved. He became an actual person in the end. As Kes said, he's very sensitive, so he was a good person, that had a good grasp of things.

A character in a holonovel is nowhere near as complex as a medical hologram would have to be

There's also the fact that they gave him additional personality subroutines.

Are you sure?

They seemed pretty complexed to me.
Absolutely. A holodeck character is a character in a novel. They have pre programmed responses to a limited range of input.

The EMH took years of development and is much more complex. As the Doctor himself points out he is programmed with the knowledge of...i forget the exact number...doctors and some millions of medical procedures

It was 5,000 something.

Nods, makes sense. I remember Harry having a hard time trying to recreate the doctor, when he went over to Prometheus

But on a side note, holographic systems do make sense in some situations as backups. A holographic security team would be a good idea I think in the event of being boarded by a hostile force

That's a really good idea, :).

Mabye that will do that in Destiny?

I'm curious to see what Destiny will be like, since it's the 1st one since voyager.

I hope that they don't use all these stupid computer generated stuff, all the modern CGI looks completely fake. The CGI on voyager was at least believable. They've ruined some of the best shows (like Winnie the Pooh)
