What games are you playing currently?

Final Fantasy XV. I had low expectations, but I'm loving it so far. It's certainly not the most diverse crew of characters, which is a dang shame, although I must say the differences in the guys' personalities makes for some very endearing character moments, and provides some good banter on the road.

Traveling by car is surprisingly enjoyable; yestersay, I was getting a bit tired, and decided that instead of staying up all night playing, I should instead plot out my route for today, taking me through both side quest locations and some unexplored territory, with some great vistas in-between, before ending up where I need to be for the next main story quest.
I haven't played now in nearly 24 hours, but I find myself thinking about it more than I do most games, which I cherish.

Combat is a lot of fun. It feels less varied than in previous games, in terms of your arsenal of spells and attacks, but there are definitely some other tactical aspects that help keep things interesting, such as targeting specific body parts and deciding if you should use your dodging skills to keep stong enemies occupied, or use your long distance warp attacks to pick off weaker support enemies. All in all, I feel that the combat is neither better nor worse than the standard ATB or turn-based combat; just very different, and in a refreshing way.
Certainly, the degree of direct control you have over the main character is a breath of fresh air after Final Fantasy XIII (even though I actually quite enjoyed it).
Also, I suspect I'll unlock some cool stuff later on; I'm quite early in the story, and I know there are some classic combat features coming up later.

The weakest link so far is the story. It's not bad, per se; just not very exciting, and certainly not nearly as crazy as I like Final Fantasies to be.

Pet peeve: I play with Japanese voices and English text, but I've noticed that the English subs aren't actually translations of the Japanese dialogue, but rather transcripts from the English version, which is subtly different in some places, and very different for some of the banter, which is quite confusing for me as a beginner in Japanese.

Currently working on Max Payne 3. Fun game with a lot of fun scenarios, well, except for that one QTE. Only criticism I have about it is that they tend to pin you down a lot and often put you in situations where using any of your special moves would send you to certain death, and then it becomes more of a cover-shooter, and that doesn't really feel like Max Payne to me. And those bullet sponges! Yeah, they're armored, and I suppose it makes sense that they'd be able to take some hits, but if I have to empty out half a clip into a single guy because they keep getting up, that to me is the definition of a bullet sponge, especially if I end up running out of ammo on them. For a game that relies so much on gunplay with no other way out of situations, that bit is disappointing.

Currently playing the 'Wait for massive download with unclear purpose before I can play FFXV' game.

No idea why 30 minute waits to play any new game are so socially accepted when in every other area of everything people have five second attention spans.

I have no expectations for quality level. It wouldn't surprise me if it were the greatest or the worst game ever made, or anything in between.

But this 'Wait for massive download' game sucks. Almost as bad as the 'Switch between twenty floppy discs' game that was popular in the 90s. Can't believe in 2016 we're back to that when just ten years ago people would have revolted if you couldn't just stick a disc in and immediately start playing.

This is why I love Nintendo and y 3DS (and most likely Switch). They make a full game, sure there are patches to minor issues (like Smash Bros characters being powerful and such.) but there are almost no wait times for cart games. I don't have 30 minutes to wait a week after a new game came out.

Until Dawn (PS4)

The wife did not appreciate when the thing happened to the person because she felt manipulated and robbed of agency over the outcome of the game. Which, the mindfuckery - of course that was the point from a game design perspective, but she did not enjoy that part at all.

I didn't mind it, so I'll probably have to finish the game on my own.

Peter Stormare playing Peter Stormare is amazing as always.

I'm always late to the party but...

This weekend, a friend and I beat the new(ish) Gauntlet. Pretty fun game. Not too much like the original, but entertaining enough to co-op.

Also took a crack at Trine 2, which was going fine until another program popped up, took the game out of focus, and made it impossible to get focus back. Then we lost all our progress for that level. Boo. I'm not sure whether to be more mad at the stupid program that came up, or Trine 2 for not being able to recover from having focus taken.

I have been working my way through War for the Overworld, as well. It is obviously a clone of Dungeon Keeper, though they've put their own twist on it. It's fun, although I feel like the constraints put on you during some missions are arbitrary and designed to paper over how overpowered you are in general. Enemy AI is also pretty dumb, but I suppose that's typical of a game like this.

Played some Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon. The former to train a bit as my team is really under leveled and the latter to bring up a bit more before facing off against the first trial.

It's crazy, I know. But 30 minutes is really nothing in terms of wait times when it comes to games these days. Always happens when there are lots of updates to be made before one can get to playing. MMOs are particularly when it comes to this. First time I played SWTOR, took me nearly all night long to download due to all the voice acting. It was one of the longest download times I've had to wait for. Just when I'd think it was done, it would go for more. Biggest downside to all those classes having voiced storylines? Download time.

It's a slasher movie in game form, it's the sort of thing you expect, isn't it?

I have mixed feelings about FFXV in the first hour.

I like the fusion of fantasy elements and the modern American West as a setting and I like the characters. I hate the focus on quests and lack of control over the party. And it just feels weird that the prince of a kingdom is sent off on a diplomatic marriage but he isn't given enough funding to pay for car repairs, especially since if mobile phones exist, then it follows that the ability to wire money exists. Why is the prince having to do odd jobs?

And I really wish they didn't stick so many damn member berries all over the place.

Now three hours in, still nothing has happened in the story. Just a bunch of jerkwads ordering me around. The giant bird creature seems like they're teasing a major plot point, but I wish those plot points would, y'know, get here.

I'm just started playing the recently released Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun and it's fantastic. It's basically Commandos (if anyone remembers that series) set in ancient Japan. It's a real-type tactical stealth game where you control five assassins with unique skills as they complete various missions. This genre has been dead for a long time, so it's great to see a revival.

Sounds interesting. I played the first and second Commandos game (and got given Strike Force but not got round to that), along with similarish games, but it's been a long time.

Well if you're interested the game does have a demo that includes the first two levels. The demo sold me on the game.

I just finished The Wind Waker HD, now I'm going to play Twilight Princess HD. I didn't like TP when I first played it on Wii, but I'm hoping the lack of waggle controls will make it more enjoyable for me. Also I couldn't pass up the Wolf Link Amiibo, which will be usable in 'Breath of the Wild.'

Could have always bought the Gamecube version of Twilight. ;)

I still have it for the GC, somewhat sealed (shells cut the wrapping up, don't ask.) when I found it for $2 at a thrift store.

How is Twilight? I have never played it.

I wanted the WiiU Gamepad controls and the Wolf Link Amiibo :)

But yeah, I almost said I sold my Gamecube, but that defense would be useless when I realized I still have my Wii.

I've started playing Sonic Adventure on my PS3, and its fun. I've never played it before, but I gave it a try because its cheap on PSN, and i'm enjoying it. Its an old game with a bad camera and sometime sfiniky controls, but playing the levels is fun. I've been playing through Sonic's levels, but I unlocked Big the Cat so I played his first fishing level. Its completely ridiculous and doesn't really fit with the rest of the game, but its not as bad as I thought it would be.

I'm also still playing Pokemon Moon, which is still really fun.
