Poll What do you think of the new series title?

How do you feel about the name Star Trek: Discovery?

I love it. I used the same title for a fan story universe once. I think having the dual meaning to the name is pretty neat.

I'm probably somewhere between neutral and like. It feels very Trek but also feels a trifle generic, and much like Voyager it feels very contrived. Oh look a ship called Voyager will have to go on a long voyage, now Discovery will have to, er, discover something? In contrast Enterprise and even Defiant feel much more natural names for a hero ship whilst still evoking a sense of their mission. It just feels very safe and I think they could have gone with something with a trifle more verve, even if it was just a variation of a theme like Odyssey.

^ When you think about it, considering its role in the show, the name Defiant is pretty on-the-nose, too, though.

I love the name Discovery for the ship. It evokes all kinds of adventures I hope we will be seeing in the series. It sounds like something that might one day be as synonymous with Star Trek as the name Enterprise.

But for the series itself I would have gone with something more, I don't know, figurative and less expectable, like “To Boldly Go”. But then again, I'm one of those who loved the plain title Enterprise. :D

It's very generic. Star Trek: Shipname has been done three times (Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise) officially and in a quintillion fan films.

It does what it says on the tin then. While it does seem familar... going for something obscure is not necessarily great, and I'm not sure what that would be exactly.Star Trek Kyushu or something people would say "what's that?"

Also even with ship names... they give a sense of what they're about (Deep space, a voyage... discovery...)

The title "Star Trek - Discovery" fails to imply something new and bold.

It's going to be a load of people in uniforms going to planets in space... I think fundamentally it won't be that new or bold, so the title is fitting. You know, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar... most audience will go in knowing whether they want to like this or not.

My only problem with the name, which I would otherwise love, is that the trailer makes the ship look like a ship of war. When I look at the ship and listen to that music in the trailer, you can bet that I'm not thinking of "Discovery". I'm thinking of a damned invasion.

It's... ok. Kind of dull and generic but it will all depend on how well it fits the show. The name is at least much better then the ship it's attached too.

If you just look at it as a name and not an in-universe Star Trek thing, it really does give off the same vibes as the USS Enterprise. USS Discovery sounds instantly memorable and grandiose, unlike the starship Voyager or space station Deep Space 9.

I like the name. I feel Star Trek should be more about discovering new things and species rather than wars. Who knows what the new series will hold, however.

The announcement says "new villains", so obviously they will be discovering conflict.

Discovery is not only a name with a great space history it actually has a lot to do with Star Trekking. It's a great name for a series.

Voyager is another name with a great space history and conjures up traveling and exploring pretty well. I like Discovery better though.

Maybe, the captain can go all Capt Ahab crazy in pursuit of some critter almost destroying the ship and crew and finally blowing up half a planet to kill it?

I know about Voyager. It doesn't change the fact that it reminds me more of the mini-van.

Well that's...really just your problem.

The Armagh planetarium here has a scale model of Voyager One hanging from the ceiling in the visitor lounge, before you even see the rest of the place. And when I went to the place with the high school outing in 1997? they printed Voyager (74656 for you, because I need to explain it) stuff everywhere underneath it, and I geeked out, it's the first time I was outed as a Trekkie in public, telling them about it.

And you think of a VAN?, good god man, what is wrong with you?
