What do women see in Vampires?

The name "Bill" was supposed to humanize the character.

I love this show and highly reccomend it! It does, however, veer on the pornographic, especially the first two years. Season Three is about halfway done now.

We had our usual midsummer barbecue. Late on in the evening the teenagers had all gone quiet so I went to find them. They were in the TV room watching something. "Tell me you're not watching True Blood?" says I. "your mothers are all next door"
"Shut up and close the door, quick!" was the response.

For the record, of course, it was Barnabas Collins who started the whole brooding, angsty vampire thing.

And why don't those TVD vampires sparkle or erupt in a ball of flame when they're in sunlight?

Well, you sort of expect that when you are watching a Showtime show (it's Showtime, right? Not HBO?). I'm not too bothered by that sort of thing - it's not like I've never seen bits & pieces before. ;)
It's actually HBO-- which I just got, so now I'm finally able to watch. I've been dying to see this...

When I was in 3rd & 4th grade I used to rush home to watch Dark Shadows on TV. My mother didn't want me to watch it (she always despised soap operas) but I would sneak it in many days, even if I had to go to a friend's house.

I think David Selby (Quentin Collins) was my first childhood crush, and to this day, I still have sort of a 'thing' for him (Falcon Crest helped too).

I was a really young kid when that was on. But I have the DVDs now and watch some episodes occasionally.

As for True Blood, I will not ever get HBO...but I wouldn't mind watching it a year behind on DVD, like I do with Dexter.

Humans can be very, very silly.

Like I need a guy that can't go into sunlight, is pasty, and hisses.

Half the male membership of this board just teared up.

Haha! Also  ing.

They're so deep and dark and brooding and sexy. What isn't there to love? I wish I could find myself a vampire.

How can they be dark if they can't go in the sun? How can they be deep if they're sucking everyone's blood instead of learning and communicating? Do they do that and then go read a medical encyclopedia about all the diseases that are transmitted via blood? Do they get regular tests for those diseases?? I wouldn't be sleeping with one. And brooding- seriously, go to a psychologist already!

And furthermore, I don't like wimps!! Whatever happened to men who used their testosterone??? I'm so sick of men with small biceps than me!!

But I still <3 you Kestra, despite your odd taste in fictional men... :p

Generic complaint about how modern TV/film vampires are not authentic, actual dangerous bloodsuckers, but rather just loser emo whiners, goes here. :p

Also generic mention of how there hasn't been a decent portrayal of vampires on screen since Kindred: The Embraced. ;)

Interesting argument I saw recently. Vampires are (un)dead, right? So, that means no heart beating, no blood pumping through their veins, right? Well, isn't the functioning of a certain part of the male anatomy kind of dependent on that?!??

I think the vampires today all emanate from Bram Stoker. Originally they didn't do anything except hunt and wear fabulous clothes. No emo, no sex, no actual normal human behaviour. This is why Christopher Lee cleaned up as Dracula, because he introduced the tortured soul to the character, which intentionally very sexy, without any sex taking place. The art of subtlety is a closed book to modern big and small screen writers and producers.

I was also forbidden from watching Dark Shadows when it was on the air-- too scary, my Mother said. :rommie: Luckily all I had to do was go upstairs to my Grandmother's apartment and my Uncle Mike would let me watch.

Well, 'heart beating and blood pumping' is sort of a prerequisite for, well, pretty much everything - if you are a human. Last I checked, a beating heart and a functioning circulatory system were used for more than just the ability to erm...get it up. ;)

So it stands to reason that if vampires can walk around and simulate life in general, they could also simulate what is required for human sexual activity.

But isn't the discussion kinda silly anyway? I mean, vampires are fictional entities. And as scifi fans, we of all groups of people ought to be experts in the area of suspension of disbelief, yes?

You can count me as one female who has not been interested in vampires since Dark Shadows went off the air. :rommie: The Vampire Diaries is too high school for me. I'll try catching up w/True Blood someday. I'm liking The Gates fine for now, but I think that's because it's new and anyway the ratings suck (no pun intended) so I'm not getting attached.

New vampire related shows in development or production:

US version of Being Human (with Sam Witwer and Mark Pellegrino as the vamps, nice casting).

Zombies vs Vampires (to give the guys something to interest them I guess).

Oops, I forgot. There HAS been a decent portrayal of vampires since Kindred got cancelled:

Daybreakers.

See? THAT's what vampires are supposed to do! Kill people! Suck blood! With nastiness and gore and fangs and the whole thing! Those vampires were NOT loser emo pricks who stood around and struck a pose. They were - apparently unique in vamp portrayal these days - actually DANGEROUS.

Sam Neill's character in that film would wipe the fucking floor with all the other so-called "vampires" that we've been seeing lately...

Have you seen True Blood?

Based on the first two episodes, True Blood is looking pretty good.
