Randy Quaid was a better actor than Dennis Quaid. Dennis was decent but people forget that Randy was really good before he went crazy. I mean just think of the roles in some of his movies

Stubbs-type science experiments, NASA-type science observations — these are more NOAA than USN. (I could believe the Navy might do some, but you’ll never have a cruiser or littoral combat ship spend three years off observing sea phenomena.)

^ The Navy did have survey ships, manned by trained oceanographers. Their purposes for surveying undersea phenomena were just more war-oriented. But, their survey crews played a big part in the US winning the cold war.

The Klingon "neutral zone", however.... yeesh. Why was it shown as a spheroid in TWOK? That made no sense to me.

Because it was a simulation. So it was a video game map, not a real representation

A concept: a star system environmental zone plus some distance around it, sort of like the territory, territorial waters around a country plus its airspace above a country. A star system's territory extends out to the last dust and debris gravitationally affected by its star(s) plus the space around it out to some distance, for example, one to two light years. YMMV .
