Randy Quaid was a better actor than Dennis Quaid. Dennis was decent but people forget that Randy was really good before he went crazy. I mean just think of the roles in some of his movies

Stubbs-type science experiments, NASA-type science observations — these are more NOAA than USN. (I could believe the Navy might do some, but you’ll never have a cruiser or littoral combat ship spend three years off observing sea phenomena.)

More like the US Coast Guard.

^ The Navy did have survey ships, manned by trained oceanographers. Their purposes for surveying undersea phenomena were just more war-oriented. But, their survey crews played a big part in the US winning the cold war.

The Klingon "neutral zone", however.... yeesh. Why was it shown as a spheroid in TWOK? That made no sense to me.

Because it was a simulation. So it was a video game map, not a real representation

Alternative reasoning - it's a spherical space around a Klingon planet or system - similar to how in reality a nations seaside border goes a few miles behind the shore, and after that it's international waters.
