What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

My pet hate is having the chief of security as tactical officer. Keeping the peace with a phaser and ship to ship maneuvers are 2 very different skillsets
Isn't tactical just the guy firing phasers and torpedoes and keeping the shields up? I expect there would have to be coordination with helm and navigation.

In reality I imagine ships would have dedicated away team specialist teams like an SG unit from Stargate or less military MACOs and then you would assign the relevant senior officer and extra medics/engineers/security depending on the situation.
I would think the "First Contact Specialist" would be a senior officer, a Lt Commander at least. And have linguists, botanists, biologists and anthropologists who specialize in first contact under his command.

Discovery is awesome just the way it is and a tribute to the TOS era.

Section 31 should be the official Federation Intelligence service.

Someone should've told Bashir to shut the hell up more often.

Wesley Crusher is awesome and I want Will Wheaton to voice Wesley on Lower Decks.

They missed an opportunity with
The ascension thing not to include him

Next Generation Klingons are insufferable. The hyper masculation of the race turned terse, dangerous antagonists into a comical bunch of overblown caricatures obsessed with waving ornate swords, eating things alive, and hushed reverence for things that do not matter. I'll take Kor's subtle threats and stated certainties over every screaming Klingon scene in TNG and DS9.

Discovery Season 1 did more for establishing Klingons as aliens than anything in the franchise since TMP. Reverting them in Season 2 to their TNG counterparts was a huge step back to the claim that the Klingons should be more alien than their TOS counterparts.

Berman Trek went on for far too long. They should have switched showrunners at least for Voyager- otherwise TNG/Ds9/Voy/Ent blends so much together it felt tired and samey. Ds9 gets a bit of a pass but VOY and ENT episodes are tonally too similar to TNG. If you're not going to go back to TOS style pacing and tone, keep trading up the production crew to keep it fresh. Discovery did a favor for trek if, for no other reason, shaking up the format of the TV show format to give us something new.

Agreed, it's why, between TNG Klingons and DS9 klingons, I prefer Ds9 klingons because TNG was basically 'worf culture shock every damn episode' while DS9 was 'this is how the rest of the galaxy sees these nerds'; and DS9 klingons are called out for their bs inherent to the system outright (thanks, Ezra) than just pinning it on the ever present ever evil Dumas family or w/e.

I think DSC did great but I think Season 2 allowed for all types of Klingons to be in the Empire so I think it's OK.

Agree that Berman era went on for way to long.

Klingon 3 Musketeers?

Star Trek was cooler when the Romulans were the honorable foes and the Klingons were the treacherous, two-faced ones.
Well, one Romulan had honor. Though sneaking across a border, in clear violation of treaty, to test a few weapons and start a war seems pretty treacherous. With Klingons you at least you knew what you were getting.

I think Star Trek calls time study, "Temporal Mechanics" so they don't have to call it horology. Yes, the joke from the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Controversial opinion AND head canon:

Elnor is actually a Vulcan, and not just any Vulcan, but the last son of Ambassador Spock and his wife Saavik, both of whom lived on Romulus prior to the supernova. After Ambassador Spock disappeared and Saavik was killed in the supernova, it was arranged for Elnor to be raised by the Qowat Milat on Vashti, as a Romulan. As such, he doesn't have the mental barriers of logic that would bind him to Vulcan culture. Maybe Picard even knows, but figures it would do more harm than good to tell the boy, but it is also why Picard feels kinship with him.

This is probably for another thread which I've failed to discover thus far, but: I guess if you asked my friends/relatives, my most controversial opinion regarding Star Trek would be that I like it at all. What is it about Star Trek which generates such pushback? If I'd said that I'm into gardening now, or cheesemaking, or keep fit or Satanism, my nearest and dearest would've been, "Okay, cool." But start watching Star Trek and the entire endeavour is met with a weird melange of suspicion and dread. There must be an angle they've not considered, like maybe I'm just researching how awful it must be to be a Trekkie, or maybe a winch fell on my head while I was out shopping for saveloys or something. If I have to say, "You know, it's really not that bad" one more time I'm going to start preemptively karate-chopping my way through everybody like a side-scrolling beat-em-up character (in fairness, my wife has become a lot cooler about it over the last few weeks and has even uttered the words "It's not too bad really" herself). I just know that if I'd said, "Oh, I only just started watching The Wire, it's brilliant, isn't it?" nobody would bat an eyelid.

Stephen Collins and Persis Khambatta were a better "Riker and Troi" than Frakes and Sirtis.

I agree that I'm not the biggest fan of Frakes. Though I'm not a fan of Collins either...

But with Ilia, how can you even tell? She had like two scenes before she was replaced by a mind controlled robot. And one of them was everyone staring at her and she declaring that she "has an oath of celibacy"
And her robotic behaviour and "Kirk Unit" "Ilia Unit" stuff was even more annoying that early Troi sensing the obvious.

Though I gotta say I think it might have been better if those characters hadn't been recycled for TNG.

The Canon Hierarchy
1. Later Canon
2. Earlier Canon
3. Writer's Intent in the absence of Canon
4. Good Head-Canon that's well thought out and easily explains things or fills in gaps
5. Bad Head-Canon that's a Hell of a stretch, complicates things, and just sounds ridiculous
6,000. Declaring Canon based on "What I like!"

Probably shouldn't be a "controversial opinion" but because this post is about Canon, it probably is by default. ;)
