    The Doctor was courupted.

    Hacked.

    By Caretaker.

We saw a Ktarian in TNG The Game, and Naomi looked nothing like her, but the Doctor was programmed to think otherwise and Sam Wildman was brainwashed to think otherwise.

    Remember, in Threshold.

"For a moment, I was everywhere. I mean, everywhere, captain. With the Kazon, back home with the Klingons, other galaxies, it was all there!"
    - Tom Paris, on his transwarp experience

If you're "Everywhere" in the universe with no clear control on where you'll show up, or fly through; you'll probably run into things that are nasty / bad for your health.

What if Tom Paris ran into/through whatever it was that caused him to "Hyper Evolve".

It's not like he developed proper navigation of Warp 10 to avoid certain places.

The Warp 10 shuttle was an experiment after all.

And in "Lower Decks", we saw another Hyper Evolved Salamander in the recovery resort.

That suggests that StarFleet recreated the Warp 10 experiment after Voyager came back and some poor StarFleet Officer encountered the same affects that caused "Hyper Evolution" into a Salamander.

Maybe he went into the Mycelial network?

Maybe instead of that "hyper-evolving" it was some sort of alien spore from that network that caused them to turn into salamanders. For all we know there's a whole society of those things somewhere in that network.

Disclaimer: I only have the vaguest of memories of what DISC said of that network (I remember there were giant tardigrades) so I apologize if that doesn't make sense.

Mycelial network is only in our galaxy that's why they couldn't use it to cross the galactic barrier

I actually love the idea of the mycelial network and it wasn't just our galaxy I think it's mentioned it went everywhere. So maybe Paris was everywhere, in every place and time at that speed. Hey isn't there a fun movie called everything, everywhere all at once?

... It was a plot point in the last few episodes of the latest season. Mycelial network is our galaxy only. There might be other mycelial networks out there but the one accessed by the spore drive ends at the galactic barrier.

It directly contradicts the line from Season 1 that the mycelial network links all points in all universes, but this way, way overpowered the spore drive, so I can understand the retcon.

Meh, one line from when they just discover it = Stamets just didn't know the limits of it yet.

    Actually that's not accurate.
Disco DID use the Spore drive outside the galaxy.
The Mycelial network was simply non-accessible in the immediate vicinity of (and inside) the galactic barrier.
Once they were outside the galaxy, they had to warp away to a distance of about 8 or 9 lightyears to use the spore drive.
When the ship was being held by 10c hyperfield, Disco used the Spore drive to escape... if the mycelial network didn't exist outside the galaxy, they wouldn't be able to use it at all.

The Mycelial network spans the universe... therre is nothing in Season 4 that specifically retcons this.

Didn't they have to warp all the way from the first planet to the 10C planet because they couldn't use the spore drive, despite the clock ticking to the destruction of Earth?

Is the Galactic Barrier keeping the network confined to this one galaxy?

    Gardening metaphors.

    Overgrown.

If the network expands ten galaxies wide past the rim of the galaxy, it's going to run out of nutrience and die.

The network is multiversal. it must gain strength from overlapping in cross dimensional space, but if it starts over growing into the void, less universes' networks are going to map over each other nearly identically.

Did something bad happen when galactic mycelial networks were connected? Some cosmic invader attacking hundreds of galaxies across each universe at the same time?

Yeah like if I'm wrong, and I very well may be, I've only seen the episode once a few months ago, and they did use *a network* after they got far enough from the barrier, that still means it's a seperate network not connected to the one in the Milky way, the Milky Way network being cut off by the barrier.

Let's everyone watch the DSC Season 4 spoilers.

Only the first 5 episodes are outside the 6 month rule.

The first 10c planet was relatively near the Milky Way galaxy... meaning that it was likely inside the 9 light years distance of the barrier (which means the Spore Drive wouldn't work in that area, so the ship had to use Warp to get there).
The Hyperfield (and new home of 10c) was located some distance away (much further away)... and it was mentioned that if they use the Spore Drive to escape the hyper field, it would take them decades to get back.

So, yeah... given what we saw, I would posit that the first 10c planet was likely located just outside the Milky Way (but within 9Ly's of the barrier - meaning you need Warp to get there)... the second/real home of 10c (and the Hyperfield) were located much further away (need to use Spore Drive to get there).

Spore drive works outside the galaxy... you just need to get to a distance of about 9 ly's away from the Galactic barrier to use it.

From what I can tell, the Mycelial Network has certain area's that you can't cross, the Galactic Barrier is one of them. That suggests the Mycelial Network is segmented into zones / area's like the one within our Galaxy, and probably other Galaxies if there are similar barriers around other Galaxies. Then there is probably the Mycelial Network/Space between Galaxies.

Ergo you hop out from the Mycelial Network into normal space, go through the Galactic Barrier, and you have the option to hop back into the Mycelial Network once you're sufficiently far enough from the Galactic Barrier.

Which means that if you can't cross the galactic barrier, and have to go to a seperate network so many light years away from the galactic barrier, then the Mycelial network can't be what Tom used in Voyager
