Which I find really strange because the character's nemesis, Odlaw, is "Waldo" spelled backwards. And I believe he's called Odlaw in all English versions.
No really, at least I added "no idea". One must of course remember that the series is actually British, of course the word walley can mean an idiot or stupid person. So perhaps not the best choice of name.
Perhaps Odlaw was a later American addition to the franchise.
All this reminds me... in middle school, sometimes we had a substitute teacher who was lanky with brown hair, a narrow face, and round glasses. He looked just like a real-life version of Waldo/Wally. One of my annoying classmates insisted on constantly calling him "Waldo." The teacher was not amused.

Weird... I always called this dude "Waldo"... Now I just discovered other Brazilians call him Wally. What the hell ?
My take is that Waldo is nicknamed "Wally". Odlaw was introduced by the WW creator (Martin Handford) in a UK book (The Magnificent Poster Book in 1991). The name Waldo dates from 1987 (the same year the first "Where's Wally?" book came out) when Handford changed the name for American/Canadian audiences for some reason. He was fully aware of the name by the time 1991 came (at which point both the UK Wally and the US Waldo books had exploded in popularity and the name could not be reconciled).
Tati opened in 1948, I guess that the word "tatty" is older than that. I wondered if the founder chose this name because of the word but apparently, it's an anagram of his mother's nickname. It's just a weird coincidence
