What a terrible finale! *Spoilers*

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
So I just finished watching the finale. Wow, this was a pretty weak episode. It just didn't feel right ending with a TNG theme. The final credits was pretty decent with the voice overs from Kirk and Picard, but other than that?

Most of it just felt really out of sync.

It's not without promise, but it just falls completely flat. Everything about it does so. Some of the reality of that decision to cancel seeped into the writing and in front of the camera. There's none of the optimistic spirit found in Terra Prime, and almost all of Season 4. It has been broken by the realisation, this is it... there's no "one door closes, another one opens" sentiment to fall back on. They even kill a popular character to hammer home exactly how bad we should all be feeling.

Making the finale somekind of "baton passing back to TNG" exercise pretty much ruined it for me. Having Arik Soong (who was at least a boné fide and unusual ENT character) was about as much of a nod as fans needed in that direction frankly. I'm sure if you'd worked within the Trek factory back in 2005, TNG were definitely the glory days of high ratings and massive media interest. But a lot had changed since then and bringing those guys back was demeaning to a show which had built up its own (obviously fewer in numbers) following. Coming off the poor reception of Nemesis, which did nothing to elevate TNG's fortunes, it made even less sense. It was a bit like getting Kurt Russell and James Spader to lord it over an episode of Stargate SG1 or Atlantis...

I wanted some parting connection to TOS, while keeping ENT the centre of attention. Something like the Generations opening, but in reverse. T'Pol with old man Archer in a wheelchair touring the NCC-1701 or the like, giving his blessing and passing away. I'd have thought that link to the original and next show in the timeline, would've been an obvious and fitting end myself.

We didn't quite get full circle, just thrown back in time to TNG... and left to hitch a ride back to the beginning!

You're not the first person to have noticed this. ;)

Deja vu? Or is it just that "TATV SUX!" time of the month?

Note to the mods - why not open something like "The Official TATV bash-o-rama" thread and make it sticky, considering the frequency of TATV threads popping up?

On Topic: I liked the use of TMP theme in that montage. What I didn't like was the combination of Archer's theme and Alexander Courage's fanfare. It kinda sounded unnatural, rushed, incomplete... It felt like Courage's music interrupted the Archer's theme, instead of finishing it.

The whole thing was forced. BTW I don't think the OP has been around for long so a bit of slack needs cutting.

You should have dropped by sooner. We would have warned you not to watch it. I wish the Vulcan arc had been moved to the end of the season and used to close out the show.

It came out as if I've attacked the OP? Wasn't my attention at all. It's not his fault that the Beebs spat in fans' faces with *the abomination* so that they need to come here to vent every now and then.

Somebody really ought to make an all-purpose motivational poster covering all These are the Voyages... related topics.

Maybe Dr. Phlox advises you to read The Good That Men Do and then see him in the morning, if you're still upset.

I suppose I can understand why Berman and Braga went back to TNG, but why "The Pegasus"? It was a pretty average episode of a pretty average season for TNG. Was it the fact Ron Moore wrote it?

When it comes to Tatv the Enterprise cast have made known their dislike in interviews for this aint the valentine. Jonathan Frakes talks about his dislike of it as well in past interviews. That he didn't think it was right to push the Enterprise crew aside for this holodeck fantasy mess. That they didn't get the ending to the Enterprise series they deserved to get.The entire Enterprise cast refuse to watch tatv because they dislike it so much.

Well, I wish I could go back and unwatch it.

It wasn't just that TIIC used Enterprise to tout their "glory days..." it's that the idea was patently stupid. Riker has a crisis of conscience and Troi doesn't counsel him, she advises him to emulate Barclay?!

And not only that, but we already know when, why and how Riker makes his decision to disobey the Evil Admiral and expose the truth about the illegal cloaking technology and the duplicity of the admiral.

As a consequence there's no dramatic tension in the central premise of the story which is that Riker needs to learn to trust his captain of the last 7 years by watching Trip blow himself up. :wtf:

At least with the Enterprise book relaunch with The Good That Men do and Kobayashi maru it continues the story fans wanted to see what happens with the Enterprise crew and what happens to Trip and his story and fixes that travesty of a finale. At least in a few weeks we'll get the next book coming out The Romulan war Beneath the Raptor's wing, and we getbto find out what happens next with that ending in Kobayashi maru was one heck of a cliffhanger.:techman:

It was cancelled because the ratings were never all that good, and after 4 seasons it had passed the syndication threshold and thus the cost/benefit ratio changed.

Shame, because unlike much of the earlier seasons, season 4 was actually pretty good.
