We've got a Sequel!

Good news about the sequel. Lindelof getting more involved as a screenwriter is even better.

Impressed enough to move it to a May release from December. They feel and believe they have got a hit on their hands.

I thought it was pushed back due to production reasons....

The film's supposedly been done and in the can for a month now, and that is including the effects guys taking their time to get every detail correct and some rumored pickups/re shoots that were done after principle wrapped.

Last time I heard anything about this was back around Christmas when Abrams announced the film locked and ready.

As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the writing team will wait to take a cue from fan reaction about which direction to go.
Oh man...:(:p

I'd REALLY love to see a remake of WNMHGB. :techman: I also reckon it'd be kind of cool if they did call the movie Where No Man Has Gone Before, but as someone else has pointed out, they did that with Enterprise and the fans didn't like it.

I don't think the "fans" disliked it as much as people think. I just think people thought it was dumb. Granted, "Enterprise," with or without the "Star Trek" in front, was a bad title.

a Sequel!

the studio is moving forward with a sequel

The studio hired a screenwriter and JJ Abrahams will co-produce (not direct, at the moment).

the Variety article shows the timeline.

would likely be a summer 2011 release.

Once the box office results are in for the first 2 weeks we'll see if a TV series is also in the works...

I just read the variety article. I think it is indeed ambitous for the team to be thinking about a summer 2011 release when we are still a month away from the current film opening. Whatever they do to track buzz, anticipation, etc....they must be excited.

No worse than The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, or Voyager, IMO.
It was bad in the context of the Star Trek universe. After two complete series of episodes and movies featuring ships called Enterprise, it was just a silly decision to use that as the name for that show.

One idea I've had is that they could have the next film begin straight after Star Trek: The Motion Picture. That era hasn't really been touched on all that much, there could be all sorts of opportunities.

It's just posturing. WB has already set a date for Terminator 5.

Well, since TMP took place in the original, prime universe and that period in time hasn't yet taken place in JJVerse, it wouldn't really make a great deal of sense to set a movie after TMP featuring PineKirk & Crew.

I don't see how the studio committing more resources to Star Trek can be a bad thing at this point.

This makes me even more excited about the upcoming film. Only a few short weeks now!

Pine: Why do I now have a son who is almost as old as me?
Quinto: *shrug* Makes sense to me. My mother is only 5 years older than me.

Since TOS and TNG are called 'Raumschiff Enterprise' and 'Raumschiff Enterprise - Das Nächste Jahrhundert' here in Germany I really didn't have any problems with the name 'Enterprise' for the fifth series. :)

Indeed let's do a remake of Khan!! Except in this version, since Khan and Kirk never met, Khan will just be senile and think that they met before. "I never forget a face!!!!!"

I don't see why the whole world wouldn't want to see that.

Star Trek: The X'd Generation.

I'm hoping we see some good, old-fashioned, beaming-down-to-the-planet, Kirk-fucking-aliens, Spock-breaking-the-Prime-Directive, judo-chopping, nerve-pinching shenanigans.

When I read that these guys were passing on Transformers 3 because they didn't want to get stale and comfortable doing the same thing over and over, I thought, "Like hell. They'll announce the Trek sequel next week." And here we are.

Star Trek better be frakking awesome.

I expect that they mean the word "fan" far more broadly and inclusively than "posters on an Internet message board." After all, J.J. has made this movie "for future Star Trek fans." ;)

I'm sure that "Star Trek" will be in the next movie's title, but either way these folks aren't going to look back at what happened with "Enterprise" as a cue to what they do - a little movie this last Summer with Heath Ledger has certainly rehabilitated the notion of giving sequels their own titles.

The better part of a day has passed since this announcement and I don't see enough gnashing of teeth and hating and topics titled "What if XII Sucks" and "No Excuses: Shatner In Trek XII!" here yet. Somebody's not doing their job.
