We've got a Sequel!

I think that the hard truth of the movie business is that often the sequel is in the works before the movie even hits the screens. Having some people work on the screenplay could save a lot of money if the movie is a hit - gotta get the next one out as soon as possible, and every day of delay is lost money.

There is no frakking way that they are going to start remaking television episodes, at this point.

Here, here! It's so much easier to make a collage of existing episodes and movies - remaking only a single episode is so TMP :).

Let's see: megalomaniac Romulan trying to destroy a Starfleet captain, a la Nemesis? Check! Giant beam cutting into the Earth, a la the Xindi attack? Check! Hey, this movie has everything! :D

Lets not forget ridiculously convoluted time travel, a la SO MANY DS9 episodes it hurts.

But then again, there were several time travel episodes in TOS - in a way, time travel is as much part of Star Trek as retroactive cannon, a la Voyager, a la Enterprise...

Seriously, how do you misplace a war by sixty years. That is just foolish.

Given the great job they're clearly doing so far, I don't think these folks will need much outside guidance on the sequel.

Though I've no doubt that the Intarnets will quickly fill up with petitions and lists of things "that must be fixed" in the next one.

This is the best news I've heard all bloody day! :D

Star Trek is alive and well folks! Of course, it'll all depend on what the success of Star Trek will be from May 8 and on, but it's so very reassuring and refreshing to see Paramount so confident in the franchise, and be willing to put so many resources behind it; I'd become so accustomed to the Voyager and Enterprise eras.

Oh, and I can only hope that the sequel will rape as many childhoods as possible. :p

The real problem with the "raped my childhood" cliche is that people are victimized by rape. There are no "victims" where the eternal gnashing of teeth about entertainment departing from people's expectations is concerned; just folks volunteering to be frustrated.

I re-read the article and I saw something I missed before, something which gave me chills as my blood ran cold:

As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the writing team will wait to take a cue from fan reaction about which direction to go.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

If this thread is any indication of fan reaction about which way to go then we're in for nothing more than an OS rehash. :(

Actually, Variety's basis for that seems to be Kurtzman's remark that:

"Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month..."

"Audiences" is a bit broader than "culling suggestions from fanboys."

J.J. Abrams and his crew should at least be as smart as the Great Bird of the Galaxy...

'If I'd listened to everything you want, Star Trek would be shit.'
Gene Roddenberry (1988)

But first things first...let's hope THIS movie doesn't blow chunks. THEN we can go apeshit over #12 coming down the pipe!

QFT. Keep in mind that they were going to make three "Golden Compass" movies and scrapped the last two after the first one tanked. And there were supposed to be seven "Narnia" movies, and they canned four of them when the second movie underperformed.

Heck, the actors and crew on "Enterprise" were signed up for seven seasons. And that didn't stop the show from being canceled after S4.

All that said, I'm THRILLED that they're already planning for a sequel, because I fully expect the movie to do just fine at the box office, certainly well enough to justify another one.

Please, Orci, Kurtzman, do whatever the hell you want. I'd rather see an honest failure than a cobbled-together attempt to please everyone.

Indeed let's do a remake of Khan!! Except in this version, since Khan and Kirk never met, Khan will just be senile and think that they met before. "I never forget a face!!!!!"

I don't see why the whole world wouldn't want to see that.

Antonio Banderas for Khan!

Oh! Who would play Khan???
Banderas would be hilarious.

My vote goes to Gary Oldman ;)

Malcolm McDowell - he replaced Montalban in the remake of Fantasy Island...

Oh, I agree. I'm just saying that paying for a screenplay you arn't going to make is a small price in exchange for being ready earlier to continue the franchise. I would be more concerned if they wern't tossing sequel ideas around. That would mean there is absolutely no studio interest in doing a follow up.

On a Spoiler note - if they are working on a sequel then they probably arn't going to magically restore the original timeline at the end of the movie, so there's that.
