Were you guys ever shamed for liking trek or any other nerdy hobbies?

My family didn't understand it much, which is why Star Trek (2009) was something I was happy to see because my brother and sister-in-law went to see it and loved it. For a brief moment, they stepped into my world. It was brief, but welcomed.

I was watching a TOS episode once, sometime in the 70s, and my mother's father was watching with me. He was a grumpy old Archie Bunker type from the Bronx with no particular interests that I could discern. Right in the middle of the show, probably after a beaming scene, he suddenly goes "Dat dere, John, is what ya call yer imPOSSible!"

I grew up in the 70s and 80s, so of course. If you were into science fiction, comics, or other geeky hobbies, the default was to not talk about it until you discovered you were among like minded people. I still remember the joy I felt when I discovered my friends at my new high school were also into Star Trek.

The worst it ever got was one kid at summer camp who decided to tease me relentlessly because I read comic books. But he was just an asshole.

No. Never. Geek culture was actually cool.

Though I do recall that in 2002-03, Star Trek was NOT cool. At all. Contrast that with 2008-11 where Star Trek was at least tolerated.

I was reading an Elfquest comic during lunch at work one day back in the 90s, when one of my older coworkers stopped by. He said "You're reading a comical book?" I happened to be on the chapter with Wendi Pini's beautifully drawn PG-rated Elf orgy scene. I handed it to him and said "Here ya go."
His eyes went wide. "They've changed since the 50s."

I could never do that. Just reading anything childish in public makes me cringe. In public I hide my comics like playboys.

Sure, but I was a kid in the 1970s and a teen in the 80s. I’d have hoped things improved for kids in subsequent decades.

Yup. I remember going into middle school wearing my Star Trek VI shirt with the Enterprise flying over Chancellor Gorkon's face and getting made fun of mercilessly. Same when the Scholastic bookfair rolled in and I bought the Star Trek VI novelization and one of my "friends" wrote "100% CRAP" on the inside.

Funnily enough, these same "friends" are the ones hitting me up now wondering if Strange New Worlds is good because they liked Anson Mount in Hell on Wheels
Awful how so many childhood “friends” weren’t, isn’t it? Trust me, you weren’t alone.

@Forbin Elfquest. That brings back memories. The comics are long gone but I think I still have the novel packed away somewhere.

As to the original question. I grew up in Texas in the 1960s and1970s; what do you think?

Many moons ago I was in New York City and I got a call on my cellphone (which had the TOS communicator noise as a ringtone). I was just coming up out of a subway station on Lexington Avenue. When the people around me heard the ring, they all laughed at me. :sigh:

I laugh when I hear Mario ringtones too. I find it very fun. Hopefully it wasn't all meant as embarrassing laughter.

Maybe it was the Yankee's jersey?
