Was TNG less progressive than TOS?

Yes, obviously. Maybe he beat up guys that he should not have been able to. But, at least when he beat up Khan, he used a weapon to do it. That makes sense, right?
It doesn't make sense when Khan is demonstrated to be stronger and Kirk somehow is still able to physically overwhelm him. To me, that is more egregious than Kira or Dax or Yar.

They are all trained officers or have combat training of some sort.

He hit him with some white rod thing that is clearly the equivalent of Mjölnir.

Yes, well it stands to reason that the soldiers she is fighting also have combat training. I just think that her, and others, win/loss ratio against bigger, stronger opponents is a bit out of wack. And I believe you are the first to respond with an actual reason that she/they are winning all these fights.

But, even if they are trained soldiers there is always the possibility of mistakes or someone getting the first blow in. Most actual combat is down to one or two blows and who connects first. Being lighter means you can move faster, get the hit in and move on.

But, real world physics aside, it is standard plot armor, whether Kirk or Kira they are going to win out. But, with Kira specifically, she would have trained against bigger and stronger so taking down such combatants would be old news.

Huh? I already posted the reason.
I don't see the reason.
Egregious might be if Data beat the snot out of that little kid that imitated him.

I don't think Kira beating snot out of Damar is egregious.
And if you already said that Kira or Yar beating up someone was bad(mean, evil)
Then I didn't particularly notice it I guess.
And if you said it previously why exactly did you repeat yourself?

It seems you getting a little too concerned over word usage here. I’m not using it to mean evil. I’m using it as in as gross violation of what would really happen. Just a very bad violation.

Words mean something. Egregious carries with it the connotation that it is an extremely bad example of unrealistic behaviors.

Which, in Star Trek, is a rather fool's errand. Star Trek has used fundamentals of technology to go and design things that are not realistic and left realism behind quite a bit ago. So, it seems odd to call out the hand to hand combat aspects as unrealistic when other elements are far more so. Even more, calling out just females fighting off larger combatants when there is many martial arts that designed around such a concept.

Anecdotal, but I have certainly heard multiple stories of smaller fighters taking down larger ones for a variety of reasons, including a Army corporal who defeated a group of four Rangers by utilizing escrima.

It's not implausible as it sounds.

I really couldn't care less if Star Trek follows progressive ideas, I want them to follow realistic ideas. It's fine to have women in important positions, that would be normal. I've always had a bugaboo about leading female characters involved in fights. Like a 99 lbs. soaking wet Kira beating up trained soldiers more than twice her weight class. Happens way too much.

You are looking for realistic ideas from a show where humans have babies with aliens, most aliens look like small town America and humans are the leaders of a galactic organisation

Wow, I guess I haven’t seen someone from small town America in a while! Is that where they got the look for Andorrans?

So he gets a pass because he used a weapon on one specific occassion, even though he didn't use any on plenty of other occassions. You know Kira has used weapons in some of her fights, too, right?

You're trying ridiculously hard to find a way to make these two sound 'clearly' different, but it's not working at all because they are not different at all.

So, what does Kirk weigh, 225? 250? Kira, 100? Kirk is bigger and stronger. So no, I am not "trying ridiculously hard" to make them sound different. I don't need to, because they are clearly, without a doubt, very different. You say "they are not different at all".
Sorry, not even close to buying that one!
