Was Chakotay/Seven really that bad?

Till death.

Her marriage contract finished the moment she became lost in space.

Sam didn't have to be loyal to a man she was not married to.

They had to get remarried to pretend that they were never not married after season 4, which would have been fun episode.

Chakotay & Seven made sense because they were stuck in that starship for a long time and weird stuff was inevitable. It's like real life.

We've all hooked up with people not right for us only because they were around a lot.

Well, firstly, in real life, a mother (like Janeway used to behave with Seven for 4 years - even if for the lesbian community, there was much more than just a mother/child relationship - , besides being her mentor) would have NEVER let her still inexperienced (in human emotions in general, and more especially, in love matters) child dating with a man, who openly (and sometimes heavily) pinned for her for years before, without trying to discourage then in case of failure, to monitor the situation to be ready to intervene, protect and reassure her child if necessary, once the love story is over (because whoever would decide to end it, you can be sure that there will be an intellectual questioning from Seven to understand the "why"s, the "how"s and surely the "and what will happen now?" And from whom will she expect for answers? Janeway - and maybe, The Doctor, even if about human emotions, he was never a big help! -). And believe me, the good camaraderie like the one Janeway and Chakotay shared during 7 years, wouldn't weigh a lot in the balance, as we already saw it often, aboard Voyager, when Seven was concerned! :D. Secondly, how many romantic relationships based on people who hooked up with other people for a short time (just because they were around a lot), lasted more than weeks or more than 1 or 2 month? For example, I guess that we all experienced vacation romances, which lasted several weeks then, once getting back in real life, our ways parted, often amicably and sometimes, with heartbreaks, especially the very first time! ;)

Whatever anywone can think of this romance, I'm glad that writers didn't insist too much about it (maybe because they guessed that deep down, C/7 would be unexpected, shocking and surely, unpopular) and let the door wide open to allow fans to see a cintinuation in their own way or as we say it in french, "Chacun voit midi à sa porte"! And authors of books, fanfictions took advantage of it and that was the right decision to take (same for the finale's ending). :techman:

I did not like the pairing of Chakotay and Seven. I bet they woudn't last long as a couple on Earth after Voyager finally got home.

Well they lasted for 3 years, and got married. If they made it that far, there's a good chance of it happening for life. You guys are starting to sound like Quark and Bashir about Dax, hoping her marriage would fail...

Sorry to contradict you, Prax, but because of the intervention of Adm Janeway (her travel in the past and her death in a suicide mission), all events seen at the beginning of Endgame and those told by the Admiral herself, never occurred.

On the other hand, that Captain Janeway & her crew are still in DQ, keeping thinking of a way to go home ; that Tom and B'Elena are waiting impatiently the birth of Miral ; that Chakotay and Seven are beginning to date ; that Tuvok is beginning to suffer of a mental illness ARE a reality BUT neither them or us know how things will turn, once Voyager arrived is in Alpha Quadrant... with the exception of Miral's birth, which intervenes almost at the end of the episode! Producers gave in to our imagination, according to our final wishes. Result: Several scenarios appear at us : 1) we can stick to the Adm. Janeway's told events (with or without the same chronology) but we still get Chakotay & Seven getting married and Seven dying at the end ; 2) we retain the part where Chakotay and Seven get married but instead of dying, Seven is very alive and pursues her love story with Chakotay forever ; 3) Chakotay and Seven come to their senses quickly after the return, part amicably - or not - and both follow their own paths, with Chakotay trying AGAIN, to pursue romantically Janeway, meeting this time more success - or still not - and Seven trying to adapt to her new life surrounded by her friends, mentors and why not trying to date again with a man or a woman.
Everything is possible! :techman:

Well, because of lack of Janeway's loving attention, Chakotay suddenly turned towards Seven, making her thereby, a consolation prize (even others actors recognized this point!)... . Which love relationship can work in these conditions?

Chakotay up-graded.

People usually go thought multiple romances and want-a-be romances before finding their match. A woman unwilling (or incapable) of responding to Chakotay was clearly nothing more than a false start. Chakotay was better off realizing this, discarding Janeway, and moving on with his life with a woman better suited to be in his life.

But did it have to happen in the last episode of the show? If this was the case, couldn't it have started a bit earlier? Just a little, like ten episodes or so?

It's more of Seven's story than Cha-Ko-Tays. For her it Starts in "Someone to watch over me" and is brought up here and there throughout Season 6(Unimatrix Zero). In "Human Error" It really starts. Seven chooses Chakotay for a mate, and practices on a holodeck version of him. She falls in love with him, and starts ignoring her duties, and short circuits.

I mentioned on page 1 that (imo)it would have worked perfectly if they just had a tiny scene in "Natural Law" where she reaches out to hold his hand, or snuggles up next to him instead of running off that night they're on the planet, but it is what it is.

In the Voyager "relaunch" (post-Endgame novels, SPOILERS!), not screen canon but "authorized") Seven apparently decided to part ways with Chakotay even before the crew physically got back to Earth (a few days passed before they could beam down) and told him so the first night they were on terra firma (at the "welcome home party"), and that time he let her go without protest (they have remained friends through the next 11 newer Voy. books and "now" she works for Capt. Chakotay, again on Voyager).

Considering what happens to Janeway in the novels ...bad call on his part lol (or maybe not ;o) )

Kristen Beyer has actually done a really good job with the books. She has done a great job at capturing the characters, the plots are interesting and she's even integrated open ended stories from episodes into the novels.

Its a pity the writer undid it all. Chicken!
Well the writer who "undid" it (Hooray, and thank goodness!!! Voyager novels are fun again.) wasn't the one who originally did the dastardly deed, and the undoing really was something for many to be happy about.

The original writer left it open to be undone.

in the novel where she died she appeared with Q...we knew right away that meant she was coming back.

The original writer left it open to be undone.

The original writer was told to put in the "disclaimer" at the last minute due to (as he said at at a convention the year before last) flack from a poll taken of Voyager fans whether such an action would be acceptable to them (it apparently wasn't). Though in 2007 the editors in charge said the act was not anticipated to be reversed.
