Warner bros announce superhero films through 2020

Holy crap! Honestly a Batgirl solo movie had never really crossed my mind, and one directed I never in a million years would have expected to get one directed by Joss Whedon of all people. This is great news, Whedon is one of my favorite creators, and the thought of him finally getting a female superhero movies has me really really excited.

Exciting and unexpected news. This is the first DC film I'm genuinely excited about (I'm cautiously excited about Wonder Woman and I'm still not convinced on Gal Gadot's casting). I also think Whedon is a great choice for Batgirl and I look forward to seeing what he comes up with.

I just hope he writes his own story, and doesn't base it on any of the New 52 stuff. Both Gail Simone's Batgirl run and the current "Batgirl of Burnside" runs are pretty much the worst mainstream Batgirl stories ever published by DC. So, if he's doing Barbara Gordon (and there is 0% chance he'd be making a movie about the other Batgirl's, even though as a huge Cassandra Cain fan I'd love to see a movie with her), I hope he has his own story in mind and doesn't take stuff from anything recent.

One article said it will be based on the New 52 stuff, and if that's true I'll lose any real interest in the movie (I'll still see it, but I won't have any hope for it). Whedon's two Avengers movies weren't based on any specific stories (even age of Ultron was just some general Ultron stuff with mostly Whedon created elements), so hopefully he will be making his own Batgirl movie, not adapting any of the terrible recent comics.

Not as excited as the two invisible dudes you appear to be jerking off!

I hope the movie uses the DC Comics New 52 version of Batgirl. Gail Simone's "Darkest Reflection" story arc, which sees Barbara Gordon back on the streets of Gotham after regaining mobility following her crippling from the Joker years earlier, is hard-edged, perfectly suited for the DCEU, and one of the best of the character.

Assuming this isn't all some early April fools joke.

I'm sorry, but if the DCEU tries to shoehorn in a Batgirl who was active pre-BvS and got paralyzed only to find a way to talk again, it's going to break the plausibility of this Batman's history as already established and make it impossible for me to buy the notion that his existence wasn't widespread public knowledge pre-BvS.

I suppose it was too much to hope for this to be a "Cassandra Cain being mentored by Barbara Gordon" movie.

Aside from checking about five separate boxes on the representation front, it's also a neat way to avoid having to bring in Batfleck in as a co-star or major supporting role and gels nicely with the idea that this is an older Batman who's already been through the ringer with at least one Robin either dead, gone or being played by Jared Leto (yes I'm still holding onto that theory! ;) ) Also, it has the best of both worlds as it offers the possibility of flashbacks to Barb as Batgirl.
Also: J.K Simmons in a Joss Whedon movie? Yes please!

I'm disappointed that it's reportedly going to be based on the Gail Simone run from the start of The New 52. The reviews I read of that one were mixed at best. I'd much rather see an adaptation of the "Batgirl of Burnside" era, which is tons of fun.

OK...I take it they won't be able to make anything for 2018, right? The Flash in limbo land right?

With 3 more movies added in the mix, it's gonna almost be movie overload for the DCFU.

But if Wonder WOman does well, it ought to bode well for at least Batgirl

I just realized something.

Gail Simone's run had, as already stated, Barbara recovering from her paralysis suffered by the Joker's attack from The Killing Joke, but she was still traumatized by it.

And the run included Barbara having to confront the Joker, and by doing so confront her own fears.

Now, this was actually part of the "Death of the Family" crossover, so the actual showdown was not between Babs and the Joker, but that can be easily changed, and I think that would actually be a pretty cool angle for a movie (and also one suited for Whedon's sensibilities).

It's just that they both tend to do a lot of sci-fi and fantasy stuff, so I would have figured somewhere along the line their paths would have crossed.

Well, SF/fantasy is a very big arena these days. So it's not really that surprising.

Wow, it's kind of surprising to me that the two of them have never worked together.
Insert "well, Simmons did do a lot of annoying quipping while surrounded by equally annoying quippers in Juno" joke here...

Oh, wait, I just di-

:p
