Warner bros announce superhero films through 2020

Director Chris McKay on Nightwing:

Bruce Wayne, in my mind, came from privilege and I think that’s why he’s more dour and angry,” he said. “He’s self-made as far as his becoming all of these cool things we like him for. … Dick Grayson didn’t come from that. Dick Grayson came from a circus family. Essentially people who aren’t rich and they are self-made. They’re entertainers. They’re gymnasts. They’re people who live hand-to-mouth and that’s something that informs him and his attitude … he’s a fascinating guy to me, because he had all the same things happen to him. He’s got some of the same negatives as Bruce Wayne and then from a society standpoint — obviously he was adopted into Bruce Wayne’s life … but he didn’t start that way. He’s this guy who has all these negatives and then even more negatives and yet he remains … Those are things why I like Dick Grayson, why I like the idea of Nightwing as a movie.

I think Tim would make a lot more sense for both The Batman and the DCEU in general.

If they go with Damian, they have to introduce Talia, League of Assassins, Ra's... and then the movie has to involve the League again in some way, making it the third of the last four standalone Batman movies to do so. They could theoretically have a story that has nothing to do with them except the flashbacks to explain his origin, but if you set up something and not use it later in the movie that's just poor storytelling.

Tim's origin story on the other hand is just a great fit in so many ways, his original motivation for joining Batman in the comics was because he saw him get increasingly more violent after Jason's death, so he decided to join up with him to "course correct" him. His story also ties into Dick's origin as well, so really through introducing him we get to see Batman's history and both other Robins as well which I think could work brilliantly for the movie, and then you can have any kind of story with any kind of villain after that. Plus, you get to introduce Dick as well, which helps with tying into the Nightwing movie and none of it is forced.
I wasn't aware of the aspects of Tim's backstory you mention there, that could actually work pretty well with where they left Batman at the end of BvS.

There is a rumour out there that Matthew Vaughn is in early discussions to direct a Superman movie.

WB should really update their DCEU slate at some point...

Matthew Vaughn of the Layer Cake, Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle fame? Finally a positive rumour regarding the DCEU for a change!

This is great news, hopefully they'll allow him to bring the same kind of tone he used in the movies listed above to a potential Superman movie. That definitely seems more in line with what most people want from a movie with the Big S than than what we got from Snyder.

The best thing about this is that it hopefully means Justice League 1 is Snyder's last DCEU movie, and other people might be coming in to try to salvage what they can from his Superman, etc.

So what the heck is going on with the DC Film Universe? SO we have Wonder Woman June 2 and Justice League in November.

Now we find out Aquaman has been pushed back to Christmas. Uh, hello...Star Wars is coming out. True, Hidden Figures did beat out Rogue One , but that was like 3 weeks after Star Wars opened. This is like the week after or so. Yeah, kids might be off for Christmas Break, but just seems like they are diluting the movie audience, where the previous schedule allowed for less competition. Also, other films (see link) will be competing at that time too.

But everything else is in chaos! The Hollywood Reporter basically said as much , and this was in February, not knowing about the Aquaman change. Recently losing the directors for Batman & Flash, there seem to be no release dates past 1 movie in late 2018. Oy!

In addition to the darker mood of the movies (i.e. not feeling like a comic book brought to life) , the other major thing that I think bothers people is just the whole mess of the DC universe - production side. It'd be one thing if there were issues causing delays...like weather on a set, or someone got injured. But this just seems like foolishness on the part of the people in charge of this.

I thought this as well, but then I remembered there is no December 2018 Star Wars film. Han Solo is coming out May 2018 (5-6 months after Episode IX), then we have an 18 month wait until Episode X in December 2019. So, Aquaman's competition in December 2018 will be the animated Spider-Man movie, and the Mary Poppins sequel (which I didn't even know existed until looking at the films coming out in 2018). I'd say the Spider-Man movie might be competition, but there is no SW to worry about.
