Vulcanian/Vulcan

Hey, I assumed obscure questions on trekbbs could be solved in about the same time it takes to photoshop a sombrero on Captain Pike.

I too assumed they were interchangeable terms. "Vulcan" being the planet, and "Vulcanian" being an optional term for the people, who can also be called "Vulcan." The latter phrase obviously caught on because it's shorter.

For my own personal Trekinology, I just figured that the term "Vulcanian" specifically referred to a Vulcan/Human hybrid. Vulcan + Human = Vulcanan. Then they added the i to make it sound cooler.
Now I'm sure someone will let me know why this explaination won't work.

In "Court Martial," Spock says he is "half Vulcanian." Doing the math, if "Vulcanian" means "half Vulcan," then Spock would be saying that he is only one quarter Vulcan.

Hnmmmm...

Americanians.
Mexicanians.
Texicanians.
Californianianianss.
Arabianians.
Frenchianian.
Canadianian.
Australianian.
Jewishianian.

In a similar vein, about 10 years ago my niece was going to college near the Canadian border, and once mentioned at a family get together that she was going to make a trip to Canadia. All of our mouths dropped open, until she explained/asked "isn't that where Canadians come from?"

I prefer Vulcanian for people and Vulcan for the planet. Calling the people and the planet by the same name never made much sense to me. ("Hey, there's a Mars! He's from Mars.")

I remember reading in the ST encyclopedia (or chronology?) that the term Vulcanian was used in the ST:TNG era, but I'm too lazy to look it up, I tried, but it refers to some obscure caracter that I can't remember, and the term is not listed under 'Vulcan' or its derivitives.

Yeah, well, until trekbbs starts featuring a patented coolometer gauge next to everyone's screen name, my foot-in-mouthisms will be forgotten sooner than the current blackface avatar controversy.

I'm rapidly losing cool points...

Actually, you plunged past it with "no thanks to you guys."

I am right now watching Season 1 of TOS and I am pretty sure Spock says "Vulcan" referring to himself on this episode, even though I heard him and other crew/cast members say Vulcanian before. One thing to remember is that they were at that point still shaping the characters and defining everything. I never had the oportunity to watch all of TOS (syndication never aired them where I live and I just got the DVDs) and am enjoying watching this, such as Spock saying that Vulcan has no moon, or Spock's mother was from Earth.
