Vikings S3

I thought it was Freya, but according to the A.V. Club reviewer, it was her daughter (although I don't remember her having blonde hair) who died of the plague.

Oh, right! *headsmack*

Honestly, I didn't recognize her either. The show may have overestimated how recognizable she was.
Agreed. But not only that, I looked up some photos of her and her hair was darker when she was alive. It might have been the lighting of the lake scene, but her hair appeared much lighter.

I had no idea who she was until I read it here...assumed she was supposed to be a vision of a goddess.

Alrighty then...Ecbert's a right bleedin' bastard.

But not unexpected, in his chat on the road before the groundbreaking ceremony at the Viking village, Ecbert's speech left hanging enough tacit to think he had plans to get the pagans out after they served their purpose in fighting for Wessex in Mercia. He may be planning to set up Aella to take the fall for it, though if he can. Nothing has been said in the show, but I would expect him to be setting his sights on him and getting a grand kid by Aethulwulf and Judith on the throne. Paris is in for it soon, good, crazy times ahead. French girls, I expect Auslaug may be finding out what things were like for Lagertha when she showed up quite soon. Lagertha running around loose and angry, that could go bad but it wouldn't surprise me if she and Ragnar have something in store for him.

While he's holding his cards close to his chest, I suspect that Ragnar's using a kingly strategy for dealing with Earl Boytoy the Usurper. Instead of wasting his own men and Boytoy's fighting each other, he'll put Boytoy and his men to work for him and let the Franks do the job.

In the meantime, Lagertha's probably going back to Wessex....

(ETA: I'm also thinking that Rollo might go with her. He wants to get out from under Ragnar's shadow, they just reminded us that he used to have feelings for Lagertha, and they're both currently available....)

Until this episode, I never realized how much of Floki's pious attitude is really simple jealously of Athelstan for Ragnar's friendship.

Oh, and Odin confirmation! Or at least as much confirmation as we're likely to get. I'm not sure if they dropped the Wanderer's name before this episode, but Harbard is the name of a character in a Norse myth who's believed to be Odin in disguise by some (though others think he's Loki).

Upon rewatch, I had to give Ecbert a sarcastic slow clap during his performance.

I still like him...as a villain. He plays the audience even as he plays the characters around him.

But he's got his boy slaughtering children and burning crosses over their bodies on his behalf? Villain.

As soon as we saw the slaughter I knew we'd get the "Let me be alone with my son!"(Ha! It was me all along!) scene, which was very enjoyable. Ecbert is a good addition to the show, and I'm enjoying his scenes immensely.

I'm also thinking that Rollo might go with her. He wants to get out from under Ragnar's shadow, they just reminded us that he used to have feelings for Lagertha, and they're both currently available....
While the show-runners are playing fast and loose with the historical nature of some of these characters, I'm thinking Rollo goes to France with Ragnar. He was in one of the sieges on Paris in 886 and eventually became regional ruler of Normandy around 911. Different outcome, but intentions would be the same - he would definitely not be in Ragnar's shadow if he was living far away as a Norse ruler of a French province.

I guess the info being 1129 years old means you don't have to give us a spoiler warning.... :p

Ragnar and the massacre survivor...I saw that coming and didn't want to believe that he'd do that. When did Ragnar become so cold-blooded?

Wow...Ecbert's man-love for Athelstan runs deep. And so does Ragnar's. Yeesh.

And in the meantime...make up your mind, Athelstan...pick a god, any god. I can only assume that he's supposed to play a role in converting the Vikings to Christianity...in which case Floki is right about him.

Athelstan, look, I found a French drag queen! (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

Interesting...Floki gets himself a parallel vision. One might consider his extreme hatred and jealousy of Athelstan to simply be another form of man-love.

Well...let's kill off another beloved regular...and apparently the afterlife involves narrating a clip show.

The way this season is going, viewers are going to start feeling like that old guy, Tostig, from season one who begged Ragnar to let him go raiding and die in battle since all his friends were dead and in Valhalla. [yt]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTmYGgvHAdU[/yt]

Hey Princess, lend me an ear!

The other ep was a clips show? Glad I didn't stay up, then.

It was actually a compilation of the individual 5-minute "Athalstan's Journal" shorts that were broadcast on History Channel, almost daily, a couple of weeks before the S3 premiere. At the time, they were an extremely effective way to summarize what had happened in previous seasons and were perfectly framed in that context.

I'm assuming that, based on what happened in the most recent episode, they chose to feature this in one big chunk for those that missed their individual airings. The only thing that was new was the narration from the Seer. In this new single-shot context, it would appear as a repetitive "old news" clip show to those who hadn't seen it in its original form.

I forgot to mention poor Judith...I was expecting something like that given the setting and last week's teaser. I suspect that Ecbert knew damn well who the father was and wanted a public confession for his own purposes. I have to question the logic that Athelstan having a bastard child by a married woman would elevate the child's status rather than lower Athelstan's, but he's the King.

Aethalstan's Journal, which as mentioned is largely a clip/recap with a bit of new footage added. It wasn't inherently bad, IMO, but if you watch the series regularly it's mainly old news. If you're just getting interested, than it's a decent primer on some of the protagonists.

I loved how Princess Judith cried out that Jesus Christ would not accept this type of violence and the bishop pretty much shrugged giving the order.

Egbert is a sadistic person who I loved to watch, but would hate to have as a friend.
