Apparently, this kind of army division happened when Vikings invaded France, with about the same outcome:The main problem is that there's no way for the two armies to reinforce each other. Not the smartest choice, but certainly one that has its share of historical precedents. Perhaps the Mercians assumed that any force sent against them would try to split an attack rather than putting themselves between two forces on opposing flanks.
