Variety: 'Star Trek' moved from Christmas '08 to May '09

Hollywood studios usually don't like to delay getting their return on a $150 million investment by 5 months. So they must feel confident about this. May 8th release date (if it stays) is another sign of confidence. It shows that they think this movie (unlike most previous Trek movies) won't flame out after a couple of weeks, that it will appeal to non-trekkies and have enough legs to still be going very strong during the big Memorial Day weekend.

They're rewriting it so Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig and George Takei can also appear... but not Shatner. :p

Moved ahead to make more money at the box office.

Some of us are trying to stay positive, and maybe the film will be more polished. Yet the article states "It does not need any script tweaks. They're two-thirds of the way through shooting, and we would have delivered a great movie at Christmas."

People, there is no way to look at this positively. We got reamed, pure and simple.

Let's take a quote from The Rock:
"I want you to take that (Star Trek Reboot), shine it up reeeeal nice, turn it sideways... and stick it STRAIGHT UP your CANDY ASS!"

That is what Paramount has said. They did not say anything about wanting to deliver the best possible product. Just that they want more money.

Well, of course they want more money! Studios don't make movies just for the fun of it. I hardly see anything sinister about that, but I hope they're right in their confidence about the movie's box office potential.

^Ok, well no more of my inane sarcasm which is going down like a lead balloon...

But if you owned Paramount, wouldn't *you* want to make more money?

You mean I gotta wait 5 more months?!? Oh :censored:s!

I'm only disturbed because I was so looking forward to it and now 20 more weeks of waiting. If it helps the movieso be it. I can handle it.

Hollywood Reporter says the change in date is unrelated to any script changes:

Paramount shuffle delays 'Trek'

"Star Trek" arguably was the biggest film moved, with the intended Christmas Day release now set for the first prime date in the following summer boxoffice season: May 8, 2009. But "Trek" appears something of an exception in the mix of itinerant pics, with its shift unrelated to script or cast considerations.

'Star Trek' is moving to summer because its has so much boxoffice potential," Par spokesman Michael Vollman said. "It does not need any script tweaks. They're two-thirds of the way through shooting, and we would have delivered a great movie at Christmas.

Sounds suspiciously like "We're very pleased..."

So I have five more months to keep away from spoilers? i don't know if I can make it...

I, still, don't see how it can make more money at the box-office in early May. Schools are still in session and most people don't have vacation time in early May. My local movie theater chain doesn't start it's Summer hours (open at 11am) until after the schools have released for the summer (Memorial Day Weekend). The Winter hours (open at 4pm) would mean 2-3 less showings per day during the release week.
Then, I keep wondering about it being released between two other films that have the potential to be big hits. Surely, that will diminish the earnings.

I've really had such a crappy day and this news just made it worse. :(

Some of the responses in this thread are just... wow. I mean, I know there are people like that, but that's just borderline mental institution.

Another 16 months...I was soooo looking forward to Christmas this year. But whatever, I can be patient. I also think if Paramount thought the movie was crappy they wouldn't have moved it to such a competitive date and Mr Nimoy was brought out of retirement for this film also, so there must something so good about the script, which makes the busy bodies at Paramount decide to change it. I'm sick of waiting but I'm also curious to know what's so special about Star Trek XI....

There's a new Star Wars movie coming out this August. I bet Paramount's just afraid to release a Star Trek movie the same year as a Star Wars movie. Of course, Star Wars: Clone Wars will probably be the biggest steaming hunk of shit in the franchise, so I doubt it would really matter.

I'll be 20 by the time that comes out, fucking 20.

Im sorry, even tho I am 18, that still feels like a fucking ripe old age.

*sigh*

I'll be 19 when it comes out. Seems most things I want to see these days get delayed or cancelled.

I guess 5 months isn't a terrible delay though (not compared to the kinds BSG has).

Hey, don't feel bad, I'll be 22. And trust me, by the time you're 22 you'll feel young. People in their early twenties are just stupid kids to the rest of the world.

Indeed.

The poster above you said something like,

"I've just had a bad day and this just made it worse"

I mean, people, REALLY!

I bet half these posters weren't even alive when all WE got back in the late 70's and early 80's was the monthly Starlog update on the new film. No fuckin internet and no forty six conventions every weekend.

We made it and so will all you ADHD young n's.

Seriously people, deal.

It's in good company with the PT then.

Bah. I'm 31 and feel the Entertainment Industry is more geared to your age range than mine. Hollywood = appealing to a bunch of hormonal teens, now more than ever... Don't like the actors in our film? Don't worry, we'll sack them and get even younger fresher ones... maybe even throw in one or two barely legal cheerleaders.

But then I'm well and truly on my way to being a bitter old man, who's feels increasingly alienated by TV/Film these days.
