Actually this works for me. The holiday season is when I see movies the least, but May is when I go the most. Sweet.

There's no problem here. Waiting a few more months is a temporary disappointment.
This stinks. I was all hyped up for seeing it this Christmas. I guess I'll just have to see Quantum of Solace a few more times over the holidays instead.
Well, it was going to be a fight to get away from family on Christmas Day to see the movie. Now I don't have to.

I don't see ANY potential of a Summer Blockbuster. I've said so in other threads, but Trek is very much a niche product. Teens think Trek is for losers wearing Spock ears. It's not like they'll be taking a date to see Trek XI, they'll see anything else available, and unfortunately, in May, there are other good movies, cool movies that a mainstream audience doesn't associate with nerdity.

Trek if it comes out May 8th '09, has to compete with Iron Man and Speed Racer. That seems like strong competitiion to me -- and going to the next weekend, probably Meat Train (a horror movie) and Indy on the 22nd. I would expect any one of those movies to beat a movie that appeals to people who already like Trek.
I'm revising my BO prediction from $100 Million to $75 Million. Good Job.

I do think this is a simple strategy move on the part of Paramount. I'm sure they feel strongly that an early May 2009 release will get them more box office, and therefore it will be a much bigger success. I think they also want a big 2009 summer hit and due to the strike might feel things are looking a bit thin for 2009. Of course this will give them more time to polish the movie. Keep in mind most big effects movies spend a year or more in post production. The "Star Wars" films have done that and most recent heavy effects films. Since they are shooting until about April this makes sense. I do think it could of been ready for Christmas but this probably will only help the final product. I don't like having to wait longer of course. One even bigger trouble I see now is keeping a lid on the big movie plot points. I have a feeling that now it's going to be very, very hard to not know a lot about what's in the film before we see it. But this still could be the best thing for the franchise. It's been a long time since we have had a summer Trek movie to see. For all those down on this remember, bigger box office success equals more Trek!

If Paramount agreed, they would not be making a "Star Trek" movie at all.
Those movies you cited are all coming out this year, May 2008, not with ST in 2009

It's got Wolverine coming out the week before, and Angels and Demons the week after.
Paramount are probably right in thinking that the writers strike will have meant that there will be less big blockbusters ready for summer 2009.

So, is this a good thing? Its opening solo, for now, but is sandwhiched in between Wolverine and Tom Hanks. This means as a summer movie and May release at that it will have to have a *ahem* stellar opening. Most summer films, if they are a success, have a huge opening weekend. Can Star Trek do this? With no competition it might, then again if I'm another studio I see that weekend as vulnerable cause Trek has been in decline.

No kidding, I remember walking into the local bookstore and seeing Starlog with the painting of the new version of the Enterprise and freaking out and tearing into the magazine to see what other tidbits I could find. What would the kids of today do if they had to deal with the lack of information we got back then. It didn't matter who was in it, what the uniforms were like, what the story was, it was NEW TREK and we waited a LOOOOONG time for that.
We survived on reruns, MEGO action figures, the toy bridge, maybe a phaser shaped flashlight and Franz Joseph blueprints and the Starfleet Technical manual. Oh yeah, and communicator style walkie-talkies. That was it until TMP.
The only problem will be waiting another 5 months, but actually it's good it won't be released on Christmas. I'll be home with the family where there's no cinemas, they roll up the sidewalk after dark and the sheep wish you a good night.
I'll be in Coventry in May. Hope there's a cinema, then.
