Variety: 'Star Trek' moved from Christmas '08 to May '09

Bastards! Making me wait this way.

PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARAMOUNT!!!!

This is going to make it much harder for Abrams to keep the operation hush-hush until near the release date.

basically, they know it's going to tank at the box office whatever happens, so this is a last-ditch resort to save their asses.
On the contrary, making Star Trek a summer "tentpole" release sounds like a tremendous display of faith in the movie.

Hollywood Reporter says the change in date is unrelated to any script changes:

Paramount shuffle delays 'Trek'

"Star Trek" arguably was the biggest film moved, with the intended Christmas Day release now set for the first prime date in the following summer boxoffice season: May 8, 2009. But "Trek" appears something of an exception in the mix of itinerant pics, with its shift unrelated to script or cast considerations.

'Star Trek' is moving to summer because its has so much boxoffice potential," Par spokesman Michael Vollman said. "It does not need any script tweaks. They're two-thirds of the way through shooting, and we would have delivered a great movie at Christmas.

I'm worried about summer competition, it was the only big blockbuster scheduled for next Christmas, now it has to compete with X-Men and Angels and Demons all within a few weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

on the positive side this gives them that much more time to polish the film.
Not unless they're getting a commensurate increase in the budget.

That's what I'm thinking. To my knowledge, there isn't another big movie planned for the holiday season. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is going to be released on November 21st, four weeks before Star Trek.

But then again, these are the same brain surgeons who decided to open Nemesis five days before The Two Towers. Watch Paramount guarentee failure once again.

Have some faith - JJ, QuintoSpock, and PineKirk will come up with a great film.

THey are most likely going to delay the release of photos and script details. I doubt that the action figures will be shown at Toy Fair now.

Son of a BITCH! :brickwall: :brickwall:

This fucking SUCKS. After all the hype, this is what we get?

I am so fucking mad I could smegging KILL SMALL ANIMALS if I wasn't...well, you know, against killing, and all that.

Still majorly PISSED WAY THE FUCK OFF now.  :(

Good thing I haven't got a booze habit anymore, otherwise I would probably be 'leaving las Vegas' at a time like this. :klingon:   :brickwall: :brickwall: :censored:

Wolverine (I refuse to use that moronic extra title) will be released on May 1, while Angels & Demons (another Winter 08 film that got pushed back) will be released on May 15. The Da Vinci Code did most of its business in its first couple of weeks and then dropped off after that, IIRC.

After A&D, Night at the Museum 2 comes out on May 22, which will likely do well. May 29 is still free, so I can see Star Trek getting that date.

Well at least they didn't say anything about shuffling Indy around. Not that they could if they wanted to. Say what you want about Lucas, nobody tells the man what to do.

Of course, i like the idea of Mary Hart on Entertainment Tonight say something like "And it looks like Star Trek is the biggest summer blockbuster in history!!!!"

The Variety article states the ST release date is set for May 8, 2009

Is she a personal friend of yours? Willing to tape a bogus news story for you? Because that is the only way you will ever hear her say that!
