Variety: 'Star Trek' moved from Christmas '08 to May '09

Clym said:
They're moving it into the summer season because they hope they'll mop up some of the sheep-moviegoers who go and see summer blockbusters regardless of what they are, or because the other popcorn flicks are sold out and people don't want a wasted trip to the theater, so they'll settle for anything.

Again, there is no logic, no genuine knowledge of either this situation or of film marketing and distribution, or even common sense underpinning your statements.

And BTW, the producers haven't made this scheduling decision. It's entirely marketing driven - there's an update at trekmovie.com now explaining how the shuffling of upper management has resulted in a number of these schedule changes.

The Paramount suits have probably seen the rushes and liked what they've seen. Plus they've got thin gruel to offer in 2009. So....get that kid money!

Does this mean we are going to start getting all kinds of joke posts again becuase people will have nothing to talk about? I mean we are talking another year and a half until this movie is released now. Just when we where finally getting some stuff to talk about too. :brickwall:

Its only another 6 months, not year and a half.

As long as the merch starts coming out early 2009,I dont mind, anything to soften the disapointment,at least it will be a better movie with longer post.

If this new date is true the movie will be released about a year and a half from now.

Yeah I know but you said "another year and a half." Wasnt sure if you thought it was another year and a half on top what we had to wait from now till December.

What happened? Did Maid in Manhattan 2 get a greenlight for a Christmas release, too?

And imagine what this is doing to JJ "Mr. Cloak & Dagger" Abrams' blood pressure. "Holy fuck! I've got to keep this thing under wraps for ANOTHER five months? God DAMN IT!"

Anger Rising!
I'm so angry right now that I can't even form intelligent thoughts. Christmas was the perfect time to release this movie, because everyone was on break from school and work. Plus, there was no major competition for movie-viewers money. There will no doubt be strong competition during May. This just heats my blood up so much that I want to hit the idiot who made this decision. :brickwall: Repeatedly!

Fuck Paramount! They ruined Christmas! This is kinda like hoping Santa Claus brings you an XBox 360 but instead he just drops your jammies and sodomizes you! BAD SANTA! BAD!

What he said, but without the sodomy.

Aw rats. A longer wait (and more work tonight once the story broke and I had to write it up for Trektoday.)

But, everybody likes sodomy!

Its odd that this was announced so soon after the writers strike ended. I wonder if there will be any major re-writes? Maybe the movie was not turning out as good as JJ had hoped?

If you read the report, you'll that this is a decision by the higher ups at Paramount which is effects other movies as well. Nothing to do with the script most likely.

Notice how this has changed right after it was revealed that "Star Wars Clone Wars" is getting a theatrical release in 2008. Paramount fears it will be far too embarrassing for the new Star Trek to make less than a made for TV cartoon in the same year. :p ;)

Some of you guys need to get a grip.

This is a business decision. Nothing more nothing less.

Maybe the creative team will get the chance to tweak a few things here and there that they wouldn't have had due to the writers strike and in the end we will get a better product.

It's not a big deal.
