USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

This iconic publicity shot is the first time I saw the Enterprise-D, and it was love at first sight!

Funnily enough this is one of my least liked angles....
The ship looks way out of balance here - with the saucer being larger than literally everything else (contrast to the TOS Enterprise, which looks very streamlined), I really don't like the see-through nacelles (more transparent parts than solid - NO engine should look like that!), and the nacelle struts look weird from this angle when they're almost a flat line.

As I said quite often - I really DO love the Enterprise D! But it took me a whole while for that. In fact, I only really started to love it once I hold a model of her in my hand, and was able to appreciate all the flowing design, unique shapes and rythm of the model. But this shot? Might in fact be one of the main reasons why I never loved that ship as much as the TOS Enterprise.

the engines on the new enterprise will always bug me. i know i'm probably in the minority on this one, but the nacelle caps should be blue like discovery's, simply for the sake of making these ships look like they belong next to each other in a scene.

same and i had the glow-in-the-dark version of that on my wall until i went off to college:

I really hate the surface texture on the Discoprise. It looks super computer-gamey and dated. Same with all the Fed ships on DIS.
It looks like darker version of the Ent-Refit hull to me.

I don't see why there can't be any variety. The DSC Connie isn't the only ship in the series with red bussards anyways.

The contrast is way higher here than on the refit. As much as I dislike the Kelvinprise design, with that they managed to capture the subtle surface texture and make it look like a real physical object instead of old computer game stock textures being puked on the ship. Not that there is necessarily need to emulate the TMP here, you could just do TOS style smooth texture. Lost In Space managed to get that look good.

Looks like they glowed in DS9.
That's because they used the Flashback model (most notably as the Malinche) and then the CGI mesh which was based on the Flashback model.

The original Excelsior studio model only appeared twice in DS9 IIRC - Emissary (as the Melbourne) and Paradise Lost (as the Lakota). Unless there were any more stock footage appearances I'm forgetting.

I like the XCV-330. Since we've never seen it in dynamic motion in any episode or film we can always imagine what that early Enterprise would have been like in flight through Earth's solar system and what her onboard systems and technology looked like.

Since she was in service at roughly the halfway point between the Phoenix and the NX-01 I imagine she'd have had something like a "Late NASA" aesthetic to her internal appearance. Lots of late 21st century-style buttons and more contemporary-looking monitors and readout screens. Sort of the Ares IV on steroids.

There was some concept art of the Europa that had a white, ceramic-looking hull like that. It would've been a good choice.

What the hell? If they were capable of making that, how on Earth did we end up with the dated computer game look of the final version?

Why did anything look like it did in season one of Discovery? Clearly, someone liked it that way, and it's not just Fuller, because there were some aspects of the look that were going back and forth right up to release.

According to one of the Eaglemoss books, maybe all of the DSC Fed ones, Fuller didn't want White TOS hulls.

I'm going to assume the Enterprise didn't get one to stay consistent with the rest of the ships

Holy shit, that looks awesome! That would have been SOOO much better!

Just like the Klingon beards, it's just a tiny little detail. But it changes SO MUCH about the general look and "feel", that it makes it believable as a TOS design!

ugh. I'm going to assume Fuller just wasn't a good leader. Just from reading the behind the scenes stuff, I know a WHOLE lot of stuff that he specifically didn't want - no tradition Klingon ship designs, no round nacelles, etc. - but only very, very few things that he DID want. Like - he apparently just didn't gave directions how to do something, just how not to do something. And most of these are quite baffling - why do you tell a starship designer to make starships FLAT?
