Best I could do with the source material. Still looks awful..To me, both those images look like somebody as been enabling the Enterprise with Antimatter Cookies and Potato Chips for far too long.
FAT is not better.

Wait, wait....
What about this design, with some small mods? It could work..

Its difficult trying to make the Kelvin designs look good. I kinda like this look. Tho it needs some texture and skin improvements on the hull. I still like it. Tho not a fan of the upper nacelles.
NahAt least the new DSC E needs spires on the nacelles and a tall bridge module to be the Pike era E...![]()
They borrowed the TMP saucer but otherwise, all the other shapes and proportions are totally different.Um. Point of order your honour. The JJ prise is made of rescaled bits of the TMP enterprise with some different nacelles basically. Oh..and they popped the saucer nab deflector back on but kept the blue glow. Not saying it doesn’t look ok...but different it is not.
John Eaves recycles concept art all the time. The Shenzhou was his old Next Gen-era fanclub design, his Klingon Warbird concept from ST'09 was his unused ENT-era Klingon battlecruiser, and his NCC-1701 is his old NX-01 concept. All tweaked a little for the current project, but it's the same stuff.I’m afraid I have to disagree with you. It’s completely clear to me that Eaves took his old design as a starting point for the DSC Enterprise. The similarities are just too close. YMMV.
I can;t wait to hear how they completely changed the bridge from "The Cage" to DiscoTOS and then changed it back again (with one or two minor changes) for TOS proper. The spikes could come and go anyways. If they're some sort of Bussard sensor or supplementary scoop to grab additional matter from the surrounding space and a couple of different models came and went then the Enterprise can have a pair in 2254, lose them by 2257 and then have another pair installed for another mission profile in 2265 at the time of the second TOS pilot, with them finally being removed for good by the time the regular series rolled around.
The back vents of the nacelles also disappeared by 2266 as well, so the refits to turn the ship into what we saw in TOS could have removed the final pair of Bussard cap spikes and added the spheres to the back ends of the nacelles. Pretty simple explanation, really, without requiring a massive and overly complicated in-universe explanation.

The point was not to reboot the design but update it. It should be visually recognisable as the TOS Enterprise. That's what they wanted and its a success. And that's why the design is so uninspired and bland. Take the TOS ship, squish it vertically and add movie details and pylons. It's anachronistic in a visually rebooted Trek universe.

In this case a design that looks close enough to the original to be considered in universe while at the same time visually updated for an audience who would never accept the 60s version. What defines it as a success?

Because there is no way we have seen every single Klingon design in their history. That is impossible and I have no issue with that, whatsoever. Why are we all jumping to explain changes in the Enterprise when nothing in the show tries to be consistent with classic Trek in any way??? Why are new Klingons and uniforms and technology all okay so long as we explain the Enterprise being upgraded and then downgraded again?
