Why should we have to explain things that are patently obvious?
One of those fan theories is that the Constellation was an earlier, similar type of ship that was refitted to Constitution specs and reclassed. I've never heard of a ship real or fictionary having it's class changed outside of the earliest US carriers that were converted cruisers.
The story was written in the 60s. We wpuld not wrote any of them that way now. But even if we dont worry about when, we both know making it Jane kirk changes things.
